PowerFall

This was a group project for a course in tangible user interfaces. PowerFall is an ambient, real-time power use monitoring system. We envisioned a drip fountain with a separate spout for each unit in a large apartment complex. The spout drips at a rate proportional to energy use in that unit. Water accumulates in a tube corresponding to that unit so that the user can see usage over the course of a day. With the use of a key fob, the user can trigger the display of more detailed information about long-term usage in their apartment. Download the final paper (PDF) for more details.

Prototype

This was a rear-projection prototype to get a sense of the scale and how users might respond to such a system. It was displayed at the end-of term open house for the Tangible User Interfaces class.
