I Believe In . . .

Accessibility

The web is for all of us. Please build web sites that comply with Section 508 and the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

User-centered design

Give users what they want, and find out what they want by working with them throughout a project.

Standards-based development

Following standards helps make web sites accessible, usable, expandable, and adaptable.

Good graphic design

Just as graphic designers often fail to consider usability, so usability experts often overlook the importance of good graphic design.

Basic scientific research

Scientists working in basic research have the hardest time making the case for funding and recognition, mostly because the ultimate value of their work cannot be judged from the work itself, but from applications derived from it. Applied science (medicine, gadgets, energy production, etc.) would be nothing without basic science.

Avocations

Bicycling

Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP): an athlete is anyone who regularly challenges his or her own physical capabilities.

Silent Movies

I love the Niles Essanay Film Museum and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. I am a proud member of the Damfinos.

Knitting and Crochet

Ravelry and Knitty are great resources.

Theater

I helped found Chicago's Theater Oobleck. "Won't look like rain, Won't look like snow, Won't look like sleet; That's all we know." Bring your thinking cap and your funny bone.

Dogs

My dogter, my hubbie, and I spend lots of time at Point Isabel in El Cerrito, California.

Princess waggling, viewed from above Princess at Point Isabel

I'm a Master's student at the UC Berkeley School of Information, focusing on Human-Computer Interaction. Before going back to school, I worked as a web developer and interface designer at the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (JGI). For more on my work history, see my resume or my Linked In profile.

Poplar Jamboree

Geneboree

This is a user interface design class project site, with a prototype user interface, for a wiki-based gene annotation system.

ALS

Advanced Light Source (ALS)
Before switching to JGI, I built web sites for the ALS at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The ALS is an electron accelerator that generates bright light for basic research.
