Bell Atlantic/Verizon invited Mr. Jones to visit with the students as part of its ongoing effort to encourage literacy and a love of reading among young people.
"We are extremely thankful to Bell Atlantic for its ongoing relationship with the Newark Public Schools," said Dr. Beverly Hall, former Newark Public Schools District superintendent. "Today's event is just another example of how corporate partnerships with our educational system work to benefit our children. We welcome Mr. Jones here to our schools and we appreciate his efforts to spark an even greater interest in reading for our students."
The Bruce Street School schools was selected to participate in the reading, in part, to inspire those students who may have trouble reading and are self-conscious because of their speech impediments. "Bell Atlantic is thrilled to bring James Earl Jones to the Bruce Street School, housed within the GW Carver School," said William M. Freeman, president of Bell Atlantic-New Jersey. "We have a history of working with this particular school to help children with hearing disabilities reach their full potential. Of course, it's also always a pleasure to see Mr. Jones interacting with students, and we hope today will help encourage within them a love of reading."
