The Extended School Year at
Bruce Street School for the Deaf

Educational programming beyond the traditional school year is outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These services, called Extended School Year, refer to educational and related services provided beyond the traditional 180-day school year. These services are not enrichment programs, general education summer school programs, or compensatory services. Rather, they are additional special education and related services for students with disabilities which supplement the normal school year. These services are provided in accordance with the child's IEP at no cost to the parents.

Bruce Street School for the Deaf offers all of its students Extended School Year services. A determination is made on an individual basis and is reviewed and discussed at each student's annual IEP meeting. The Extended School Year program is six (6) weeks long, lasting from the beginning of July until the middle of August. Students attend for a half day in the mornings. Transportation is provided for all of the students, as well as breakfast and lunch. Students' IEPs continue to be implemented in all core curriculum subjects. Each summer also encompasses a theme. This summer's theme, Health and Nutrition, falls within the curricula areas of Science and Social Studies. Students learn about making healthy nutrition choices, the food pyramid, good eating habits, and exercise. As per their IEP's, students continue to receive their related services, such as speech, counseling, occupation and physical therapies.

But, summer is not all reading, writing and arithmetic! Students enjoy such activities as swimming, roller-skating and bowling.

Each summer Bruce Street School offers its students unparalleled educational opportunities, along with social and recreational activities. Students look forward to a safe, educational, and fun summer!
