The Bruce
Street School for the Deaf is one of the oldest day programs
serving the deaf and hard-of-hearing children in this country. It is
the oldest day program in
New Jersey. One of the goals of the Bruce Street program has always been to provide an outstanding education for the hearing-impaired child close to his home. Classes were first started in 1910 when almost all hearing-impaired children (except those attending Bruce Street) in the United States had to leave their homes to find an educational program that could meet their special needs. These children were away from their families for weeks at-a-time. However, hearing-impaired children could attend Bruce Street School, receive a specialized, quality education and remain at home with their families. Since September of 1979, Bruce Street School for the Deaf has been located in a modern school building, George Washington Carver Elementary School. Bruce Street School is close to many major suburbs of Newark and offers deaf and hard-of-hearing students an outstanding education in a modern school close to their homes.
