Japanese akoya
cultured pearl necklaces are sold wholesale and are temporarily
strung 16 inches in length. Before they are worn, they are strung
on silk thread with knots between each pearl. These knots cushion
the pearls and prevent them from scattering if a strand should
brake. Each strand of pearls has a half millimeter variation
in size, with the smallest pearls placed at the ends and the
largest pearls graduating to the center. For example, you would
refer to a strand as 8 by 8.5 millimeters where the diameter
of each pearl on the necklace is at least 8 millimeters and no
more than 8.5 millimeters. Larger size pearls command more value
because they have to stay in oysters for a longer period of time
before they are ready to be harvested. Pearls larger than 10
millimeters are referred to as south sea pearls.
