National Veterans Wheelchair Games Come to Minneapolis

WASHINGTON (April 7, 2005) -- More than 500 disabled veterans will compete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games from June 27 to July 1, 2005, in Minneapolis.  This year marks the 25th year of the event, which has grown to become the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world.

"We are proud of these talented athletes, our volunteers who make these Games possible, and the communities that open their doors and their hearts to these heroes," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson.

The Wheelchair Games, presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), are open to all U.S. military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, certain neurological conditions, amputations or other mobility impairments.  The Minneapolis VA Medical Center and the PVA Minnesota Chapter are hosting the 2005 games.

PVA National President Randy L. Pleva, Sr., said, "Year after year, the rehabilitative nature of the Games provides endless opportunities for our wheelchair athletes to pursue their athletic goals and dreams.  The Games also serve as a stage where we can show the world what we can do -- to soar far beyond any physical limitations we might have and reach previously unimagined levels of success."

Sports are important in the therapy used to treat many disabilities.  VA is a recognized leader in rehabilitation, with therapy programs available at VA health care facilities across the nation.  For many injured veterans, the Wheelchair Games provide their first exposure to wheelchair athletics.

At the Games, veterans will compete in track and field, swimming, basketball, weightlifting, softball, air guns, quad-rugby, 9-ball, bowling, table tennis, archery, hand cycling, a motorized rally, wheelchair slalom and power soccer.  Trap shooting, golf and a power wheelchair relay will be exhibition events this year.

The 25th National Veterans Wheelchair Games begin June 27 with a wheelchair basketball exhibition at Peavey Plaza on Nicolette Mall in Minneapolis, as well as the 2005 Disabled Sports, Recreation and Fitness Expo.  The Expo is among the largest exhibitions of products and services related to the health, well-being, sports and recreational needs of people with disabilities.

On June 29, a wheelchair sports demonstration will take place at the Mall of America, allowing the public to preview some of the sports taking place during the week.  "Kids Day at the Games" is on June 30, when local children with disabilities can meet the wheelchair athletes, watch them compete and participate in their own wheelchair sporting events.

Many of the events will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center, also the site for the opening and closing ceremonies.  Other venues include South Town Bowl, Eden Prarie Bowl, McMurry Field, Metro Gun Club, Braemar Golf Course, the University of Minnesota, the University of St. Thomas, Lake Harriett, the Ft. Snelling soccer fields and Como Park.

Anyone,
I need your help and this wheelchair topic came up at the right time.
I have one of our Directors who is 100% and the VA recently gave him a electric chair,  he is really sick obviously.  They wanted to put one of those lift haulers on his car for the heavy wheel chair but it won't work.   He needs a trailer of some sort because of his vehicle. Can you help him out ? or recommend someone for us. ?   He is in NYC.
The VA's answer to him was just stay home all of the time, dontcha just love those kind considerate folks.?>???
That is bullchit as we all know, I would sure like to get him mobile and out of the house it will really help his mental attitude and maybe keep him with us lots longer,
He is one heck of a Veterans Advocate and works hard for all of us Vets, that is what he has dedicated himself to. Helping Vets and he gives it 200% when he can get out..

Well, Folks:

Jane Fonda has done a mea culpa for sitting on an NVA Triple A gun.  A gun responsible for downing many a US Airman over North Vietnam during that year of 1972.

Now Jane is "So sorry," but why?  BECAUSE JANE FONDA IS SELLING A BOOK.  And Leslie Stahl and the rest of the 60 Minutes (CBS) turncoats are helping her facilitate the whole snow job.

I thought this was the "Flower Generation."  These were the rabid anti-capitalists, who have now sold out like the rest of their ilk for the almighty buck.

Well Jane, on behalf of all Vietnam Veterans  (living and dead) TAKE YOUR MANUSCRIPT, PUT A NICE BORDER ON IT, PUT IT ON A ROLL AND PUT IT WHERE IT BELONGS:  NEXT TO THE CRAPPER!

Years ago, Jane Fonda stood up for her beliefs in the name and honor of communism.

Now, Jane Fonda is pushing her capitalistic beliefs.   She wants to make money with her new book and new movie.

Things change...

Years ago, DISNEY made it big on good, moral, honorable, American family stories.  It's when DISNEY changed their format that the Corporation started having problems.

Wal-Mart made it big;  because they advertised everything sold in the store was American-Made.

Boy, how things change!!

    Jack   http://www.CapVeterans.com

It wasn't Jane's fault.   It was because her former husbands made her do it.
(SHE  MUST  BE  TRYING  TO  MAKE  A  COMEBACK.
SHE THINKS AMERICANS ARE STUPID...)

It's time that American Democrat Leaders got behind a solution and pushed it forward, instead of their DOOM and GLOOM forecasts.  John Kerry is still the Democrats top forecaster.  Does any Democrats think the Iraq Election was a major step forward...   Or are all Democrat politicians afraid of John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and their soon to be elected leader, Howard Dean?
There must to be some Democrat Politicians, who are NOT afraid of their Far-Left Leadership...?

Rice: Iraqi Voting Exceeds Expectations
Add to My Yahoo!  Top Stories - AP

By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) said the Iraqi elections went "better than expected" Sunday, despite incomplete reports about the extent of voter turnout in areas plagued by intimidation and violence.

I

She also called insurgents "terrible thugs" who will not succeed in stopping voting and the progress of democracy in Iraq (news - web sites).

"Every indication is that the election in Iraq is going better than expected," Rice said on ABC's "This Week."

But Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), D-Mass., sounded a note of caution in an interview on NBC's "Meet The Press."

"It is hard to say that something is legitimate when whole portions of the country can't vote and doesn't vote," Kerry said.

Former CAP Marine Tim Duffie  tduffie@cinci.rr.com  is in contact with Marine Officers of CAP in Iraq.   What CAP did in Vietnam is again working in Iraq!    http://home.earthlink.net/~american_families/id5.html      Lets help the Iraqi People directly.   Please learn how you can help the Iraqi People in these CAP Villages.   Get involved.   Let the Iraqi People learn the truth of the kindness of the American People.
If the interest to help is there, maybe something can be started with the right people helping out!    During the Vietnam War, packages of needed goods were sent directly through the U.S. Mail to CAP Marines.   The U.S. Navy Corpsmen could always use some family medical supplies to pass around.  However, because of the War on Terrorism and packages, there might be rules in place now.
Sometimes, these villages needed schools.  The CAP Marines and Navy Seabees did the work for free.   However, cost of supplies to build and run the school were donated by CAP Marines' families, friends, former schoolmates, fellow-Church members, etc.   I heard of one CAP Navy Corpsman, who paid for one school himself.
During the Vietnam War, few Americans ever heard of CAP Villages.
