News: NASCAR GOES GREEN

About the book,

THE WEEKEND STARTS ON WEDNESDAY:

Born in the south more than 60 years ago, NASCAR truly represents America.  More than 70 million famously passionate fans live in all corners of the U.S.  At NASCAR races, you’ll see 200,000 of them – most decked out in the garb of his – or her – favorite driver.  Yes, “her” because 40% of fans are female, expressing as much (and often louder) enthusiasm as their male counterparts in NASCAR Nation.  We’ve all driven our cars too fast.  It’s easy to “get it.”

Only someone like Andrew Giangola, with inside access to NASCAR fans, drivers and events all over the country, and a unique voice mixing exuberance, humor and wonder, could write this book.

The Weekend Starts on Wednesday tells stories of remarkable NASCAR fans – from those who travel like migratory birds thousands of miles to the track to terminally-ill children clinging to heroes who bring true joy.  Readers will meet older fans who watched races on the sands of Daytona Beach when drivers made their real money hauling moonshine, learn what motivates today’s super fans, and spend time with celebrities bitten by the NASCAR bug.

About the author, Andrew Giangola:

A self-described "New Yorker in Nascar-land" who became a fan by meeting fans, Giangola and his wife, Viviane, daughter Gaby, and several yappy dogs

reside in lower Manhattan.

As Director of Business Communications for NASCAR, Andrew Giangola oversees “off-the-sports pages” coverage for the sport.  He is a frequent contributor to NASCAR.COM and Pole Position magazine. He has had articles published in Sporting News, Sports Business Journal and The Journal of Sponsorship.

Giangola has served as a spokesperson for NASCAR in numerous television and radio appearances.  He has given speeches at the Marketing for Men Conference, The Eastern Motorsports Press Association, Association of National Advertisers, and at Columbia, NYU, and University of South Carolina.  Giangola was recently recognized as one of the ten top communicators in Sports by PR WEEK.

Prior to joining NASCAR in 2003, he led global media relations at McKinsey & Company, the world’s leading management consulting firm.  Previously, he was VP, Corporate Communications for Simon & Schuster and had served as national spokesperson for Pepsi-Cola Company.  Prior to entering the working world as a trade journalist and magazine editor, he graduated from Fordham University, concentrating in Journalism when he was able to concentrate.

FLASH: as of July 2009
