After 62 years and a few years
of efforts by our few remaining shipmates,
Harry Bataille, GM1c, was finally honored and awarded the Bronze Star
at an awards ceremony on Veteran’s
Day, November 11,2005. The ceremony was held at the Brigadier General
William
C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in North Hanover Twp., located just north of
Fort
Dix & McGuire A.F.B. New Jersey.

Robert Joseph Barrett
NEWPORT NEWS - Robert Joseph Barrett, 78,
passed away April 25, 2004. He was born in New York City July 21, 1925,
to the late Robert and Grace Barrett. He was a U.S. Navy combat wounded
veteran of WWII, and was also a survivor of the sinking of the USS
Skill. He was retired from the Local 12, International Association of
Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers as a pipe insulator. He
was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 176, the American Legion Post
0141, charter and life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart
Chapter 607 of Newport News, life member, former fire commissioner and
former fire chief of the Centereach Fire Department, Centereach, N.Y.,
a member of the Navy League, and also volunteered as a tour guide on
board the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk. He had resided in Newport News the
past 16 years. Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife of almost 50 years,
Minnie Mae Barrett; two sons, Billy Barrett and his wife, Karen, and
Lee Barrett, all of Newport News; three stepchildren, Franklin
Steventon and his wife, Cynthia, of New Berlin, N.Y., Ellen Perkins and
her husband, Jim, of Greenville, S.C., and Gary Steventon and his wife,
Yvonne, of Chesapeake; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Wednesday, April 28, in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Newport News Chapel. The
funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Interment with military
honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, in Arlington National
Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground
Blvd., Ste. 154, Newport News, VA 23606.

George
Krings
of Somers died September 9, 2009 at Somers Manor Nursing Home. He was
born
September 15, 1916 in Astoria, NY, the son of George E. and Lillie
Ruzicka
Krings. A Purple Heart recipient, seriously wounded and among a handful
of
survivors when the minesweeper USS SKILL was torpedoed by a Nazi sub
during the
invasion of Italy, he never complained of his injuries and was grateful
for
every day that followed. In 1946 he resumed his career as a Marine
Insurance underwriter
and broker in New York. He retired from Johnson & Higgins in 1980,
and was
a founding partner and consultant to Zeman Krings Intermediaries until
1990. He
was a man of great integrity, a truly honest broker, proud of his work
and
trusted by all. He is survived by his son, Kenneth C. Krings,
daughter-inlaw,
Meg Wittner Krings and grandson, Cooper Krings, of Studio City, CA;and
nephew
William C. Masters of Katonah. George was pre-deceased by his wife,
Edith B.
Krings on April 5th,and his dear son, Roy, in 1991.
