The Silver Coin Award

Every year a silver landscape coin is given to an individual who has produced work of deep significance that contributes to our understanding of the relationships between landscape, history, and memory.

2000 Award: Dr. Kenneth E. Foote

Dr. Kenneth E. Foote is the first recipient of the silver coin award. His book, Shadowed Ground: America's Landscapes of Violence and Tragedy (University of Texas Press, 1997) presents a typology of ways that sites of tragedy are remembered. This typology has strongly affected our sensibility regarding such places. His straightforward interpretive action renders them newly meaningful, and has changed the way we look at innumerable everyday features of the landscape, from roadside crosses to empty lots.
