There were a total of 77 bikes for the Wounded Warrior Escort Mission on Veteran's Day, Nov 11, 2009. The group included Nevada Patriot Guard Honor Guard, Nevada Patriot Guard, American Legion Riders, Marine Riders, Teamsters MC, Iron Workers MC, and Union Brotherhood MC. There were 12 bikes in the Honor Guard Escort trailing the last bus with American flags flying.

Las Vegas Metro Motor Patrol provided traffic control at all intersections while the black and whites were leading the seven bus procession. USO representatives thanked our group for being there and conveyed the wounded warrior's appreciation for our support. A number of our group met the buses at the main entrance of the Venetian with a flag line. Parking was a bit sticky for the motorcycle escort so we didn't get a chance to set up all our flags at the entrance before the buses unloaded. However, the Mission was definitely a success thanks to Spyderman's planning and coordination and the participation of our other motorcycling brothers and sisters.

We definitely would have appreciated more Southern Nevada Patriot Guard members' participation. I understand it was mid-week and a holiday for many of us. However, the last several Missions have seen 5% or less of our membership at a Mission. I pray that all of our remaining Missions are "Welcome Home". I'd hate to honor a Nevada Hero with that weak of a turnout.

This email was sent to Spyderman from the American Airlines coordinator:

Hello Ron,

I just wanted to send a quick note to say that it was nice working with you on the arrival of the "Wounded Warrior" charter. I heard that everything went off without much of an issue out on Russell Road. I am truly sorry that we could not have your presence in the terminal or on the ramp, as that would have been incredible. As it stands, word was that your group was incredibly remarkable yesterday.

Should I ever be able to assist with anything in the future, please feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Have a great day,

Subject: Thank you so much

I would like to thank everyone from your organization for the support and chaperone at my dad, Rodney Burkitt's services last Friday, October 9th.  My family was overwhelmed with pride to see all of your riders already at the funeral home Friday morning when we arrived, flags lined up and standing tall.  The ride out to Fernley was unbelievable also with your riders leading the way and then lined up behind us.  I cannot tell you how much your presence was appreciated-I'm sure dad was loving it all as well.

A big thank you to AJ and Eric also for assigning them to this mission as road captains-they did an awesome job.  Please post this on your website so that everyone involved can see that they are very much appreciated for this wonderful service that you provide.

Also, I'd like to thank our very good family friend Mike Gitschel "the other noisy kid" for making this all happen-we did not know he was a member of the Patriot Riders and he made this happen for us-this act of kindness will not be forgotten, thank you so much.  I know my mom and brother were also very moved to see all of you there, it touched our hearts deeply.

Lastly, I will have photos of this mission if you would like to post them on your website. Please let me know who I should send them to.

Forever grateful,

Carol Burkitt Daum and Jerry Daum

Thursday, October 15  Escort Mission

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend this escort.  You truly are a unique group of people and I'm proud to be associated with each of you.  This Mission had some interesting twists to it but everything worked out in the end.  I believe there were approximately 40 motorcycles and a half dozen or so vehicles.  Kevin's mother expressed her appreciation for our attendance but was not able to thank everyone.  1Sgt Ramey spoke to much of the group and expressed his appreciation as well. Again thank you all for making this a successful Mission.

Click here for the story on KOLO-TV:  http://www.kolotv.com/home/headlines/64677177.html

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend this Mission. Kevin's Mother and 1st Sgt Ramey wanted me to express their gratitude for everyone's support.  Even though the Mission had a few wrinkles in it at no fault of ours, we still performed our duty to honor Kevin and his memory as well as show his family support for their loss.  With well over 100 motorcycle riders and an incredibly large number of personal vehicles in the Procession we were able to get all of the vehicles together before we arrived in Fernley.  To the gentlemen who took the outrider responsibility before the service and after it as well, my personal thanks goes out to you.  The PGR is truly blessed to have so many dedicated people involved that make my job much easier, I can't thank you all enough.  It is each of you that make our Missions so successful in Northern Nevada.

You are incredible group of people that come together during the worst possible time for a family to show your support for them, their loss, feel the pain they do, and to help memorialize their loved one.  We received several compliments about the way we conduct our business and that is due to each of your commitment to our Mission.

Thank you for making my job easy,

Fernley Soldier Laid to Rest (From the Reno Gazette Journal)

Monday, September 14:  Escort SPC Lyons from the Airport to the Funeral Home.  31 motorcycles and 1 vehicle escorted Spc Lyons from the Sierra Air Center to the Funeral Home.

The Mission went according to plan due to the sucessful information gathering of the CAO and a representative from the Fernley American Legion.  The Reno PD did a fantastic job of keeping us moving from the Airport to the Funeral Home without any glitches.  My personal thanks to everyone that made this Mission successful, you're an incredible group and again my personal thanks.

Tuesday, September 15 Escort from Reno to Fernley & the following services: There were approximately 100 motorcycles and 3 vehicles to escort Spc Lyons from Reno to Fernley.  This was truly an awesome site going down I-80.  We had the assistance of Motorcycle Officers from Reno PD, Sparks PD, NHP throughout our trip through Reno and all the way to Fernley.  After the services we again escorted SPC Lyons to the Northern NV Veterans Cemetery for his service.  This Mission as well went off without a hitch.

I am sincerely grateful to everyone that made this Mission an incredible success.  Each of you should be very proud of the job we did these last couple of days,

In Loving Memory

Robert Allen Boardman

July 2, 1936 – June 10, 2009

On Friday June 19, at the Northern Nevada Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada, our family said our final good-bye to Robert Allen Boardman our beloved family member.

Robert was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather.  Married to Catherine Pferschy on August 2, 1957, they have three children, Debra, Robert, Ronald and two grandchildren Cassidy and Hailey.

Catherine has been disabled for many years from Multiple Sclerosis and Robert cared for her needs until his passing from Cancer.

Robert served in the United States Army between the Korean and Vietnam wars.  He served his Country stateside while stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

A memorial service was held at the Northern Nevada Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada. Attended by family and friends the service was presented by The War Veteran’s Association, The Northern Nevada Veteran’s Coalition, The American Legion Riders, and The Nevada Patriot Guard Riders.  To all our heartfelt thank you!

Thank you to Captain Dave Burke and the Nevada Patriot Guard Riders for the honor, respect and compassion given to Robert and our family.  We thank you for giving of your precious time, for traveling many miles and at times placing yourself in harms way as you protected everyone from the departure at the Sparks Marina through the memorial service at the Northern Nevada Veteran’s  Memorial Cemetery.

The love of your fellow veterans, their families and your country are all epitomized in your presence.  With grateful hearts, we send you our love, respect and appreciation for all you have done and continue to do.

To our dearly loved family member, Ride Captain Chuck Pferschy of the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders, we thank you!

If there is anyone we failed to mention, please know the family thanks you and appreciates you very much!

Sincerely,

The Robert Allen Boardman Family

Following the service lunch was served for everyone at the Wigwam Restaurant in Fernley.

The service and food was outstanding!

Dear PGR Nevada - and all who ride in support

I'm writing this to say thank you for all you have done in the past year - and in past years and in the future.

I have followed some of what you great gentlemen and ladies have done from the time I was first called out of retirement to go to Iraq in 2005.  I was then returned to regular active duty and have continued to serve.  March will make it 30 years I've served in one form or another.

Yet, I've never seen the outpouring of support that you and your fellow riders across the nation have provided.  It is great not only being a Nevadan (from Pahrump) but to also know that there are good folks in NV and bordering areas that come out in full support of the troops.

As I and my troops near the completion of yet another deployment - this one in Afghanistan, I extend a very merry Christ-filled Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Yuletide, or whatever holiday you celebrate at this time of year.

Stormy:  The Las Vegas contingent of the Patriot Guard did itself proud today, Sept 2, in performing it's mission for Lt. Col Don Cornell, USAF (Ret).

Jim had the honor guard, 9 riders strong, in place this morning to escort Don to his final resting place.  My wife and I followed the escort in our vehicle and we were proud to be the tail end Charlie.  As it turned out, a number of other of Don's friends just happened upon the escort enroute and they just fell in line.

I was so impressed with the image that the Patriot Guard presented to passers-by.  I was also heartened to see another Patriot Guard contingent waiting for Don at the cemetery.  I cannot tell you how many of the attendees told me how impressed they were and what a tribute it was to Don and his family for the Patriot Guard presence.

I count myself lucky to be associated with the Patriot Guard.

Thank you all, thank you all & bless you too!

Bill Smith

Thanks from the Navy Seals

As the CAO for the Miller Family I wanted to extend the thanks of the Miller Family to all that braved the cold and the wind to provide support for this mission.

I also wanted to add my personal thanks to each and every one of you  who provide a much needed emotional support for the families of the  fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. You can't begin to imagine what it means to them.

I tried to make it to and shake each and every one of your hands at the close of the graveside service to let you know how much it meant  to me to have you there, not to mention how much the family appreciated your time and support.

I am a member of the NVPG, but being an active duty soldier and membership in the honor guard usually places me a different position to honor the soldiers than being able to join my fellow riders in the escort and flag lines at these unfortunate events.

I do follow the email traffic when it comes and will continue to do so.  Again my thanks to all of you.

Thanks,

1SG Thomas Sauls aka DkKnight

Special Warfare Operator, Second Class Alexander Ghane, US Navy SEAL, Feb. 8, 2008, Las Vegas, Nevada.

God gave us near perfect weather today. The Patriot Guard Riders of Nevada were honored to stand for this fallen hero. His story is proof positive that fact is stranger than fiction. At the rider's meeting, a former Marine gave us a brief bio of this brave man. Alexander was not born in the USA. After 9-11, he was attached at high school and had both arms broken. However, he was not bitter. One day while watching a TV show on the SEALs, he remarked that one day he too would become a SEAL. He wasn't taken seriously because of his physical condition and lack of coordination. Alexander worked night and day to overcome these short comings. His mother followed him in the car as he ran 8 miles a day. He would do countless sit ups and push ups through the night. After he qualified and joined the Navy he continued to work toward his goal. He was accepted into the brotherhood of SEALs soon enough. In fact, he was in the top 5% of every class and category of qualification for the SEALs!

So it was that on this near perfect day we gathered to honor our Nevada Hero. One of the most moving examples of devotion I have seen was when the bus and car caravan from California arrived at the mortuary with over 100 of Alexander's shipmates, most of them SEALs. We were supported by many Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department motorcycle patrol units as well as several black and whites that arrived way early in case there were protesters. The motorcycle patrol provided escort for the procession all the way to Boulder City, Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, nearly 40 miles from the mortuary. Our PGR Honor Guard surrounded our Hero and the family and escorted them the entire distance. I was shocked to see 3 lanes of an expressway closed at our entrance ramp as we swung into the fast lane. When we arrived at the cemetery, the PGR flag line lined both sides of the driveway into the cemetery. After the last car came through the gates, we assembled in a semi-circle around the many mourners and held our position until the last family member had gone. Alexander received a fly-by from a formation of 3 WWII vintage war planes. The grave-side service was, of course, extremely moving for all present.

There are so many people who made this Mission a success I just hope I don't leave anyone out:

Linda Garrison, Blue Star Mothers, gave me the name and phone number of the CAO. Lt. Commander Tom Sheppard, the CAO, immediately contacted me and gave me every bit of support the PGR needed to complete this Mission. Our Ride Captain, Bennie Noordam, coordinated the Mission. Our Honor Guard was provided escort duty from the mortuary. Jim McClain and his PGR Honor Guard performed magnificently. Ed "Egorhh" Frank, Vic "Doc" Moss and his wife, Ron "Popeye" Moore, and many others made this Mission happen. There we a number of riders from our neighbor to the north Utah who joined us today. Many of our PGR veterans made the Mission as did many new members on their first Mission. I am so proud to be associated with all of these great people!

God Bless every one of you and God bless America.

Subject: RE: Westboro Baptist Church Hates Reno??

This soldier shakes his "ordained Southern Baptist minister's" head at the antics of this so-called church.  Didn't I recently read where this church and its head pastor were successfully sued in court to the tune of over a million dollars?

One wishes we could carry God's sacred Word to those that follow this lunacy - so that they could truly read what is in scripture - rather than some leader and his cronies being able to spew their lunancy while calling it the "gospel".  One has to wonder what they would do to the Lord if He was to walk in their midst with His message of love and forgiveness today.

Thank you - good folks - for what you do for my fellow soldiers and for supporting our fallen comrade in arms.

Not In My Town

As the protesters ran to their car, they frantically called back to their "church" and declared, "The Reno mission is a complete failure!"  Only 15 minutes into their 45 minute protest, three members of the hate group, Westboro Baptist Church, gave up their "mission" in the face of nearly 200 Patriot Guard members and citizens of northern Nevada.

If you're not familiar with the Westboro Baptist Church, google them, and you'll learn everything you need to know.  They pervert the Constitution (many of the members are lawyers) and the pervert the Bible.  They are not affiliated with any Baptist organization, but are essentially a "church" consisting of only family members.  The WBC has taken up protesting the funerals of service personnel who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan with their hateful signs declaring, "Thank God of IEDs," "Semper Fi Faggot," and others.  Their justification is that  "God" is punishing America by killing service men and women, having devastating hurricanes ruin entire cities, and yes, even the events of September 11, for America's embrace of the homosexual lifestyle.  Believe or not, this is what they espouse, and it's disgusting.

So, I have dreamed and prayed for the day when I could comfort the WBC, and would frequently check their website.  Due to the unfortunate loss of a soldier in Iraq, I saw that they were coming to Reno to protest his funeral.  My sweet Eric said that he would not bail me out of jail if I "confronted" them, and we agreed that we would follow the lead of the Patriot Guard, a motorcycle group, who by invitation, protects and shields the family of the fallen soldier from the WBC group.  Fortunately, I was able to make contact with the local chapter of the Patriot Guard.

Eric joining the group.

So, this morning, we joined the group.  The intent was the surround the WBC and hide their signs with American flags.  This picture does not even capture half the group.

This is where you can see just barely a part of the WBC's sign.  The Patriot Guard use their American flags to obscure the signs.

After 15 minutes, and a lot of verbal harassment, the WBC left for their car.  The entire group, peacefully and non-violently, followed them to make sure they left.  Thereafter, the Patriot Guard lined both sides of the street, to the honking support of many cars.  Yet, there was one car, a rental, that dared to drive up and down a couple of times, giving us the finger...it was the WBC.  Too cowardly to truly stand-up for their sick beliefs, yet piggish enough to taunt the group as they zoomed past at 45 mph.

I am very proud of my family, Eric, Alex, and our good friend, Adam, who stood up for what is right.  I know that others wanted to join us, and were prevented due to circumstances, but they were there with us in spirit.

Past veterans and a future one.

The Patriot Guard, and us, too, stayed until the end of the service, creating a huge honor guard in front of the church.  The strains of the bagpipes signaled the conclusion of the service, and the grieving family came out to thank the Patriot Guards.  Even in their moment of grief, the family moved down the flag line, personally thanking each person and shaking their hand.

I love the Constitution of the United States of America, and I will defend a person's right to take full advantage of all the freedoms therein.  And if the WBC want to protest in front of a federal building, or their own church, go right ahead.  But a family's private grief is not to be appropriated to further their sick agenda.  I'm proud how we "ran them out of town," and I hope that we never have another occasion to have to address them again.

We are so proud of the Patriot Guard Riders of Nevada! You folks did an outstanding job today at Sgt. Sean Gaul's services. Much of this credit goes to our northern Nevada State Ride Captain, Dave Burke.

Below is from the Reno newspaper today:

About 150 Patriot Guard members and supporters encircled eight protesters at a Reno memorial service this morning for a soldier slain Jan. 5 in Iraq. The Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, Kan., announced it would protest the memorial service for Staff Sgt. Sean Gaul today in south Reno.

The group says its protests highlight that God is killing soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to punish America for condoning homosexuality.

Walking along South Virginia Street just north of Bishop Manogue High School, they held signs with words like “God hates fags” and “God loves IEDs.” IED is a common acronym for improvised explosive devices used to hurt and kill military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Patriot Guard is a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who support fallen soldiers. They showed up with American flags and formed a curtain around the protestors so the public found it difficult if impossible to see them.

Danielle Fargo, who lives in Damonte Ranch, came with her children to support the Patriot Guard.

“We came here to support our troops and to stand up against the hate,” Fargo said.

One of her children held a sign that said, "God is love."

“We want to show people that god is love, not hate,” Fargo said.

The demonstration and counter demonstration have not been violent and are being monitored by the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff¹s Office. So far they have only interacted with the groups to keep them off South Virginia Street.

Gaul¹s memorial service is set for 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

The services for Sgt. David Drakulich went well and the PGR was well represented with approximately 20 plus bikes, riders and passengers on the warmest (40 degrees) Northern Nevada day in a few weeks.  There was of course a full Color Honor Guard and Governor Jim Gibbons attended as did a number of County and State Motor Patrolmen. The Drakulich family truly appreciated our presence and we were thanked by many of the attendees.

I would personally like to thank everyone that attended the services and especially those that also went to the airport to welcome home Stanley Roberts.

A Reno woman sent the following e-mail to Dave Burke, our Northern Nevada Ride Captain after the services:

Just want to tell you  tonight, I had dinner next to two of the Soldiers that escorted this young man home to our Town.  They were telling me about the Patriot Guard Riders and how much they loved them..as it was you people that protected them..from the protesters that want to get them in an altercation.

It amazes me that there are people who are so ignorant and disrespectful..!

It was a very moving story they shared of their duties in this most pain filled job.  I have done grief and loss counseling since 1986 and told them it was the most loving thing they could do for a Mother who lost a child to war..Knowing their child was NOT ALONE.

I pray that peace comes soon and our loved ones come home.

Thank You for what you do..
Stay Brave Stay Strong

And don't let the Ignorant Filled with Cruelty Harm these families OR THE SOLDERS THAT WATCH OVER THEM!

Folks,

I’d just like to thank you all for the great support we had today for the Sgt. Paredez mission. For you who couldn’t be there, there were protesters. Metro ran them off pretty effectively and we didn’t need to perform that part of the mission. However we did give a motorcycle escort between the funeral home and cemetery for the hearse. And we did get to do an honor guard flag line at the cemetery.

YOU WERE ALL MAGNIFICENT!!!

After it was all over we held a meeting at the Post 8 where we discussed the current situation with the NV PG and PGR and got feedback from the membership as to how we could improve our missions in the future. More on that later as things develop.

Right now, I just want to express to you how very much I treasure you all and my association with such a great bunch of people. THANK YOU!!!

The following is a message from Stormy, the Ride director for today’s mission.

Ed "Egorhh" Frank

State Director – South

Nevada Patriot Guard

Thanks to everyone who made this mission a success. Without the help of Popeye, The Legion, Metro, and all the great Patriot Guards, we would not have been able to honor our Nevada Hero. Everyone performed their duties in an exemplary and honorable manner.

Thank you all,

Stormy

Well the assholes form Westboro showed up in Sin City.  We really should have introduced them to our Mayor; I'm sure such a  colorful man like Uncle Oscar would have had a few comments for them.  If there is anyone deserving to be put in stocks and flogged, these are them.  But thanks to the Patriot Guard and the LV Metro Police, the jackasses took off running once they saw us.  Truly a professional event if I've ever seen one.  Much thanks to everyone who came.

Doc (aka Vic Moss)

"Only a biker understand why a dog sticks its head out the window of a moving car."

Egorhh,  you missed a great weekend.

I know I haven't been on a lot of missions, but in my opinion this one will never be matched. The towns people were incredible. As the procession approached cars would pull to the curb, the people would hurriedly get out and stand at attention saluting or with their hands over their hearts. When we left the funeral home and headed to the high school for the public service the streets were lined with people holding flags and tears running down their cheeks.

It gets a bit difficult to ride with tears in ones eyes.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I would personally like to say” THANK YOU” for your support yesterday in the blistery cold.  Lance CPL Budd M.  Cote was the son of my wife’s boss.  I was informed of this tragic loss last week while supporting a conference and I was in shock after this notification.  This is the second event that has hit my office in the last 9 months.  I had no idea that a group like this existed until I was told about it by Mr.  Jim Gabel.  He was in the conference with me when I was notified and proceeded to tell about what the group does.  This was the second military funeral that I have been to in my 20 year career and definitely the most touching.  Please pass along my SALUTE to all the members of the group and a big Thank You also.

First off I want to personally thank everyone that made the services, as a Palm employee and the unofficial mortuary liaison, this makes my job easier.  Funeral Directors are very protective of the families they serve and this can make Egorhh’s job tougher getting the info to these families.  When we have a job well done like this last mission, among others, it helps me with the Funeral Directors.  I have to admit that I was very careful in the beginning, watching the NPG's every move, making sure that everything was perfect and done with dignity.  Being in the Funeral Industry I was somewhat nervous about the NPG.  Now I must say that I am a proud member of the NPG and have the highest respect for everyone involved.  This acceptance from the Funeral business is important and well earned! This high quality service by the NPG for Palm will now help me with the other local mortuaries since Palm is the local leader and the other mortuaries tend to look up to Palm.  (e.g. Ofc. Prendes Service) So Thank you NPG!
