Alma

ALMA is an all-acoustic ensemble that brings to life the Chicano/Latino experience through musical presentations.

Lira co-founded EL TEATRO CAMPESINO (Farmworkers' Theater) in 1965 during the Delano Grape Strike directed by Cesar Chavez.  Lira wrote plays and songs associated with the farmworker struggle and the Chicano Movement.

Lira teamed up with PATRICIA WELLS SOLORZANO in 1979 to form musical group Alma; RAVI KNYPSTRA joined later.  These three musicians comprise the core group.

Currently, Alma is touring two musical presentations:   CHICANO!  500 YEARS OF STRUGGLE and CESAR CHAVEZ:  HIS LIFE AND TIMES.   Both programs use songs and narrative focusing on the contributions and accomplishments of Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

The group's latest CD release is titled "I HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER".  Alma has also scored the music for the PBS & Paradigm film "THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS:  CESAR CHAVEZ & THE FARMWORKERS' STRUGGLE".   The film has won the ALMA AWARD for best documentary as well as numerous other awards.
