Degree and Non-Degree Options

The graduate program in art education is housed in the School of Education at Brooklyn College. The two Master of Arts degrees in art education are intended for students who hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in either art or art education. The non-degree Teaching Certificate is designed for students who already hold a masters degree in art or related discipline. These degrees and certificates address the needs of three distinct groups:

At this time there is no baccalaureate degree in art education,
however the Art department offers a B.A in art and a B.F.A


M.A. leading to Professional Certificate (33 credits)

For students who hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Teaching Art (all grades) or equivalent course work and teaching experience, and who seek an M.A. in Teaching Art. This 33 credit Master's program consists of 18 credits in Education (including issues of diverse classrooms, curriculum design, and research) and 15 credits in Art (including advanced courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and art history).Link to Sequence of Courses

M.A. leading to Initial and Professional Certificate (46 credits)

For students who do not hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Teaching Art (all grades)* or equivalent course work and teaching experience, and who seek an M.A. in Teaching Art and a New York State Initial certificate in Teaching Art (all grades). Students must have the appropriate course work and credits in Liberal Art and Visual Art (see admissions criteria link). This 46 credit master's program consists of 31 credits in Education (including issues of diverse classrooms, curriculum design, student teaching, and research) and 15 credits in Art (including advanced courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and art history).Link to Sequence of Courses

Initial Certificate in Teaching Art (22 credits)

For students who already have an appropriate M.A. or M.F.A. in Art or in a related discipline, and wish to pursue the New York State Initial Certificate in Teaching Art (all grades)*. Depending on prior course work and teaching experience, students take up to 22 credits in Education (including issues of diverse classrooms, curriculum design, and research)and may be required to take additional courses as a condition of admission.Link to Sequence of Courses
