Field Experience
Studio and academic coursework is closely tied to the art of teaching art. In the first year of the program students observe in a variety of public and private K-12 settings, sharing their observations on learning and the culture of urban schools in seminars that are designed to develop reflective teaching practice. In the second year, students spend two semesters student teaching in elementary and secondary classrooms where they develop the skills and abilities they need to communicate with and motivate learners, as well as to design and teach meaningful art lessons. Throughout these field experiences students are mentored, supported, and evaluated by certified art educators and Brooklyn College faculty who explicate the practical and conceptual aspects of teaching art, including preparation for entering the profession.
