The late actor Roscoe Lee Browne, who died April 11 in Los Angeles at 81, had a liquid baritone that made his voice instantly
recognizable. Once, in fact, back in my ad agency copywriter days, I spent a couple of hours in the recording studio with
Browne (he narrated a TV spot I wrote) and I found him to be a man whose scrupulous refinement matched his voice.
He also had a wicked wit. Early in his career, when a white director told Browne (who was black) that his voice sounded too
"white," Brown replied calmly, "We had a white maid."
Thanks to Phil Digiacomo, aka Phil the Film Guy, for the tip on the anecdote.
