In this section, we answer some of the questions posed to us by
cives regarding the daily conduct of the job, requirements, historical issues or
anything else pertaining the role of Censor past or present. The Q&A below
are all from citizen postings. If there are any additional questions you would
like to see addressed here, please mail
the webmaster.
-
How much time does a Censor (or any other magistrate for that
matter) have to commit?
A: Typically about 1 hour per day, or about 3 hours a
weekend. This is just an average.
-
Does the Censor need to know about computers, spreadsheets,
etc.?
A: It is very helpful to have a working knowledge of Excel, Access
and database management. Previous Censor databases were done entirely in
Excel; so a good knowledge of formula (add, subtract, if statements) are
essential.
-
Does the Censor need a high-speed Internet connection to
function effectively?
A: Well, I (Sulla) have never accessed the database from anything
slower than a cable modem. However, it takes about 2 minutes for all the
entries to load with a cable connection. I would highly recommend a
broadband connection.
-
What about monetary contributions? Magistrates have said
they spend a lot of their own money
A: I (Sulla) have paid about $500.00 my first year as Censor out of
my own pocket. This year, that figure has diminished because:
1-Database is no longer on Excel
2-I no longer print out every piece of communication
3-I was given some supplies by an ex-citizen such that I still have a
surplus
It is very reasonable to expect some degree of out-of-pocket expense just as
it was for magistrates in Antiqua.
