Welcome to the Montessori blog!

This weblog is my online journal. You'll find my thoughts on a variety of Montessori topics as well as links to other things on the web that I find interesting and may be of help to you. When the spirit moves me, I may also include longer essays about the Montessori method of education. Welcome.

Random Observations
We had a visitor in the elementary class today. She mentioned that she felt a sense of joyfulness in the class. I’m pleased that she picked up on that!

Energy levels are increasing with the approach of the end of the year. Or maybe it is just the low-pressure system hanging around.

I forgot to include in the newsletter that went out this week that the school won the phone book recycling drive. Bravo! Such spirit among our families makes that possible.

A parent has been delivering seconds and left-overs from Rubbermaid where he works. What a treasure-trove. Among the goodies are bunches and bunches of Sharpies. It will take a long time to use them up! We were joking that we should give one to each child to do self-decoration for Mother’s Day. (That is really just a joke!) but Valerie had a great idea. At the beginning of the year we can give one to each family for labeling all those things that tend to get lost at school!

Montessori and the Brain
I cam across this video on the Web while nosing around. This physician has had an article in the Montessori publication we provide for parents (Tomorrow's Child), so I thought this would be worth mentioning:

It is always nice to get validation for what we do.

Talent Show
The elementary children independently decided to have regular talent shows as an opportunity to showcase their talents and gain practice performing in front of an audience.

Our latest performance was Friday. I was pleased at some of the performances done be the students. In addition to singing, recorder duets and comedy skits, two girls did a skit about Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan. That was an out-growth of interest in sign language and blindness.

Montessori said to follow the child's interest. Our talent show is an affirmation of how this principle plays out in the classroom.
