C O N C E P T
During my years at art school I was forced to read the derogatory comments of students of different schools and degree programs scrawled on the bathroom stalls of Central Washington University's Randall Hall. With few exceptions these comments decried the pursuit of art as a noble and worthwhile endeavor. Sweet vicarous revenge was being allowed to display my art in the NWAW bathroom.
CORRESPONDENCE
(undated) from C.W. Potts, Chairperson Exhibition Committee, to AGD
The Exhibition Committee met last night to review proposals. We very much enjoyed your letter and your slides and would like to exhibit your work in our gallery's "Private Space".
Because our space is very small we thought it more appropriate to show your smaller pieces. In addition we would like to include your letter (statement) and so are keeping it until we hear further from you.
The concern we have is the possibility of your work being stolen or damaged since it cannot be easily guarded. We do have insurance but it has a hundred dollar deductible clause, so you see our position. I'm enclosing a floor plan of the space as well as some literature about our gallery. If you are still interested, please reply and we will set up a date.
Sincerely,
C.W. Potts

Dear Mr. Daniel:
Thank you so much for your letter concerning "Private Spaces". You mentioned you would like to show four of your pieces in the two restrooms. We had in mind showing several of your smaller pieces. How would you feel about this?
If this is agreeable with you, the dates we would like to you to show would be as follows:
December 11, 1983 - Pieces would need to be at the gallery ready for installation
December 15, 1983 - Opening of "Doodle Art Show" in main gallery. Opening of "Private Spaces".
February 8, 1984 - Close of "Private Spaces". Close of main gallery show, "August Encalada".
February 9, 1984 - Removal of all artwork
An honorarium of $65 per each "Private Spaces" installation will be sent to you some time after the opening, depending on the descretion of the NEA (usually within a month).
Please let me hear from you regarding this.
Thank you,
Cherie Potts

Dear Alan:
Thank you so much for letting us exhibit your paintings in our "Private Spaces". We will be mailing you your $65 honorarium on March 15, and you should receive it soon thereafter.
You will no doubt be pleased to note that a faculty member from your previous school (Ellensburg?) saw the show and was amazed to recognize your work and delighted with your letter. Unfortunately I don't remember her name, but she was a woman, slight build, brown hair, about 40. Sound familiar?
We had one unfortunate incident, as we discussed might happen. One of the paintings was knocked off the wall during an opening, and part of the frame was broken. I glued it back together with some wood glue---I hope you don't mind. It isn't visible from the front of the painting.
Thank you again for exhibiting with us. If you should ever come to Portland, please visit the Workshop.
Sincerely,
C.W. Potts
