November 10, 2003  Meeting Minutes

Minutes taken by Mary Alamillo

BOARD REPORTS:
President:
Old Business:
1. Twin Rivers Park
All games were moved from Twin Rivers Park to Quake as a result of the flooding during November. The league came out even on the concession stand in spite of the flooding.
2. Halloween Tournament
Twisters, Warthogs and Wolves played at Quake on a lighted field. Those in costume added extra fun to the event. Apple juice, donuts and candy helped ease the cold weather! A suggestion was made to move the event to the prior weekend next year and to use glow-in-the-dark balls.
3. The League Website
http://home.earthlink.net/~alamillos/arlingtonyouthsoccerleague The League website is up and under construction. We are hoping to have registration on line this spring. Mary Alamillo will be working with computer teachers at the high school. It may become a class project.
3. Treasurer
a. Currently some games are missing. Refs will be paid as soon as the records are straightened out. b. $6,160 was paid to the County soccer organization. There is a discussion about dropped teams as they still cost the club $150-250.
4. North County Report
All positions have been filled on the North County Board. Silver Lake was the mover and shaker on that one!
New Business:
1. Volunteers Needed
a. Volunteers will be needed next season for field maintenance—best option is for teams to volunteer—“many hands make light work.”
b. A Registrar is needed. Kris and Frank will work with them this year, but would like to give someone else this opportunity to contribute. If we are able to hook up the necessary programming, we are hoping to have returning players register on line. New players will still need to register in person as we need to see their birth certificates.
c. Coach Recruiter is needed NOW! By starting early, you can get a feel for who would be interested in coaching, willing to take advantage of local training, etc.
d. A Referee Recruiter. This could be a great spot for some of our older players. We need to be sure to support them when our parents, or the parents of the opposing teams become aggressive or abusive.
2. Tournament
Discussion was held about sponsoring a Kick in the Clover tournament and holding it at Kasch Park in Everett. A charge of $250-400/ team was suggested. The cost per game would be $20. Possible action items: a. Finding a coordinator b. Finding a manager for the event c. Do a kids tournament in conjunction with the British Challenger Soccer Camp this summer.
3. Select Soccer in Arlington
A proposal was made to explore the possibility of having four select soccer teams in Arlington, Boys/Girls U12 and U14. We have been losing our competitive kids to the surrounding leagues, to include Snohomish and Lakewood. One issue raised is where to find select quality coaches. This program would probably attract kids from other clubs. One possibility would be to have joint Arlington-Lakewood teams.
4. Micro Soccer
To get kids interested in soccer earlier, it was suggested that a more robust “micro-soccer” program be instituted in Arlington.
5. Training
There was a discussion about what kind of training the club should offer this fall—referee and/or coaching. A comment was made “we need to grow our coaches from the ground up”. This was in reference to Select Soccer in Arlington.

7:10 Call to Order

Present:  Steve Huston, Kris Huston, Matt Huston, Brian Thompson, Roland Kirby and Mary Alamillo

Minutes from previous meeting

BOARD REPORTS:

            President:  Old Business:

1.  Concession Table

The lady who tried to coordinate concession sales has resigned.

Brian Thompson and Roland Kirby will provide folks for this Saturday’s games.  Kris and Steve will review the paperwork/schedule provided by coordinator.

Some additional incentives to get the teams to participate next year were discussed, but no decisions were made.  Some suggestions included selling Krispy Kremes by the individual or box of donuts—splitting the proceeds with the team.  Maybe even a friendly competition between the teams for who sells most.

Another suggestion was to have the teams only be there ½ day twice a season instead of a whole day once a season.

2.      Halloween Tournament

We will go ahead with this.  Friday, 10/31/03 from 4-6pm at the field.  The coaches need to make arrangements for their own scrimmages.  Donuts, punch and candy will be provided.

New Business:

1.  Girls’ District team is folding.

2.      Due to darkness all home games scheduled after 5pm will need to be rescheduled.  Kris or Steve will contact the Arlington coach who will be responsible for contacting the opposing coach with revised time and place.

3.      Treasurer—Kris stood in for Billy Heath

a.       There are still some late fees to collect.  After the season is over, there need to be a discussion about refund criteria.  We need to clarify the conditions for refunds.

b.      Corporate fees have been sent into the State.

4.      City of Arlington

a.      Complaint about the nets not being picked up after practice.  Coaches will make a stronger effort to effect this.

b.      Trash pick-up is critical.  With concessions being sold, candy wrappers and coffee cups seem to create litter.  Just a reminder to have teams pick up the trash.

c.      Steve brought in some sand to fill in the holes, particularly in the goal boxes.  This has been done on the east end of the fields.

Committee Reports

NCYSA

1.      Ronnie Gonzales and Anna Kinney are attending this week’s referee training.

2.      Nomination Committee is looking for nominees for 3 positions.  Steve would like at least three suggested nominees.  One of the criteria is to be able to attend the monthly NCYSA meetings.

3.      The NCYSA website should be up and running within the next 30 days.  Jeff Matson is putting it together.  It should be at spider.net1.com.

Those present watched the video “Attitude is Contagious”.  It emphasized how detrimental poor adult attitudes towards refs and/or the other team result in disillusionment and defeatism among our younger refs.

We are just starting to build this website and welcome any suggestions--great soccer websites, pictures you've taken of your kids playing soccer this year, ideas you have for fun-and/or fund-raisers, how to streamline the registration process and any other ways to improve our kids' and our own enjoyment of the sport.  Send suggestions to alamillos@earthlink.net.

Our next meeting will be on November 8, 2003 at the Boys and Girls Club on 59th Ave near the airport.  We will continue planning for next year.
