At present, the following AFTS specialty classes are available for all students.  ATFS can teach these classes at an appropriate private venue or at one of our local range locations in the Birmingham or Anniston area.  We can supply firearms and safe factory ammunition (at a small incremental charge) for students during the class for those students who do not currently own them.  All classroom materials and books are included in the class fees.  Group rates are available for any of these classes.  Private classes are available on demand.  Each scheduled open enrollment class or private class requires a minimum number of students.  All students for all classes are required to sign our standard waiver of liability agreement with AFTS.

AFTS Basic Defensive Rifle/Carbine

This class is aimed at new, or first time owners of semi-automatic rifles and carbines, specifically the AK-47, AR-15, Mini-14, and similar defensive rifles.  The class focuses on helping the student develop the basic knowledge and skills for:

Basic firearm safety in the context of these long guns
Loading, unloading, and administrative handling of the rifle
Basic marksmanship skills and fundamental gun handling skills for deploying the rifle and achieving good hits at ranges from 5 to 100 yards.
Setting up the rifle sights and/or scopes for an appropriate zero, and understanding bullet trajectory, point of aim, point of impact over typical useful ranges for these rifles.
Basic cleaning and maintenance for the rifle
Selecting good ammunition for the rifle
 Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the rifle
Establishing a good baseline for further practice and skills development

Typical duration is 5 hours, classes are taught at the range. The class fee is $75.00

 

AFTS Basic Defensive Shotgun

This class is aimed at new or first time owners of pump, fixed barrel, and semi-automatic shotguns intended for use as defensive weapons.  The class focuses on helping the student develop the basic knowledge and skills for:

Basic firearm safety in the context of these long guns
Loading, unloading, and administrative handling of the shotgun
Basic marksmanship skills and fundamental gun handling skills for deploying the shotgun and achieving good hits at ranges from 5 to 25 yards.
Basic cleaning and maintenance for the shotgun
Selecting good ammunition for the shotgun
Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the shotgun
Establishing a good baseline for further practice and skills development

Typical duration is 4 hours, classes are taught at the range. The class fee is $75.00

AFTS Concealed Carry Tune Up

This class is for our students who are licensed for concealed carry and want to participate in a workshop to improve their skills.  This is a mostly live fire exercise conducted at the range.  Topics include

A review of basic firearms safety and best practices for gun handling
A review of the important handgun shooting fundamentals
A review of holster options and concealed carry modes for different styles of dress
Work on the draw stroke and adapting your draw stroke to realities of close quarters
Using coarsely sighted fire, flash sight picture and full sight picture at various distances to achieve good hits as fast as possible
Shooting and moving
Engaging multiple targets
Faster reloads
Non-diagnostic malfunction clearance drills
Building a practice base line, including range drills, dot drills, and other tools to use in your practice

Typical duration is 4 hours, classes are taught at the range. The class fee is $65.00

AFTS "Scenarioland"

This class is for our students who are licensed for concealed carry and want to participate in a workshop that puts them in role play situations for real world scenarios.  We are seeking to create an environment for learning new tactics, learning what works and what does not, in different types of self defense scenarios. 100% of the drills are conducted with airsoft handguns provided by AFTS, the entire is exercise conducted at the range.  The emphasis here is not how to instigate and win a gun fight, but rather how to avoid one, how to escape from one, and how best for an armed citizen to react if your are trapped in one of these scenarios.  There are not a set of proscribed actions for these scenarios, we only create an environment for learning, and after action review with our instructors and your peers.  We change the scenarios for every event and typical types of scenarios would include situations that might happen in your home, public parking lots, retail establishments, or other public places.  Typical duration is 4 hours, these workshops are conducted at the range. The workshop fee is $50.00 and includes all airsoft supplies and safety equipment.

 AFTS Legal Issues for Self Defense and Concealed Carry

This class is taught by a practicing local attorneys with both criminal defense and prosecution experience.  It covers the basics of justifiable use of lethal force for self defense and the law in Alabama that governs carrying a concealed handgun.  This module is included in the Concealed Carry 101 Class and the NRA Personal Protection Class.  Typical duration is 2 1/2 hours with ample time to answer student questions.  The class is taught in a local classroom facility.  The cost is $35 per student and must be paid in advance to reserve a seat, walk-in's are welcome for this class if seating is available.
