At present, the following classes are offered. ATFS can teach these classes at an appropriate private venue or at one of our local range locations in the Birmingham or Anniston area. We can supply firearms and safe factory ammunition (at a small incremental charge) for students during the class for those students who do not currently own them. All classroom materials and books are included in the class fees. Group rates are available for any of these classes. Private classes are available on demand. Each scheduled open enrollment class or private class requires a minimum number of students. All students for all classes are required to sign our standard waiver of liability agreement with AFTS.
NRA Basic
Pistol & Basic Pistol First Steps NRA Basic Pistol is intended for the first time handgun owner, prospective handgun owners, or anyone who wants to learn the basics of safely owning and firing a handgun, along with basic marksmanship fundamentals. This class meets the requirements for many out of state concealed carry licenses, including those of the state of Florida. The class focuses on the basics of handgun safety and learning to safely load, unload, maintain, and accurately fire a handgun. It includes both classroom and range instruction. For many of our students who have "Swiss cheese knowledge" about handguns, this course can go a long way to filling those "holes" in your knowledge and skills to put you on the path to better practice habits, safer gun handling, and a more knowledgeable approach to owning and using a handgun. The course is taught in two different formats. NRA Basic Pistol First Steps is a 4 hour course is taught at the range. The longer version of the class, NRA Basic Pistol, has significantly more range time with one on one instruction. This longer version of the class is 9 hours, split between classroom and range sessions. The class fee for NRA Basic Pistol First Steps is $65.00 and the fee for the Full NRA Basic Pistol is $150.00. Protection in the Home This advanced class focuses on the skills, attitudes, and knowledge the student needs to successfully own and use a firearm for personal defense in the home. Prior shooting experience or completion of one of the Basic Pistol classes is a pre-requisite for the class. It also includes a 2 hour session on self defense and the law conducted by local attorneys. Class duration is 9 hours, split between classroom and range sessions. The class fee for NRA Personal Protection in the Home is $150.00 NRA Basic Rifle is intended for the first time rifle owner,
new rifle shooters, prospective rifle owners, or anyone who wants to learn about
safely owning rifle and good basic rifle marksmanship fundamentals.
This class focuses on the fundamentals of rifle safety, learning to load,
unload, maintain, and accurately fire a rifle. The class consists of both
classroom and range instruction. The
course is taught in two different formats. NRA
Basic Rifle First Steps is a 4 hour course is taught at the range.
The longer version of the class, NRA Basic Rifle, has significantly more
range time with one on one instruction. This
longer version of the class is 11 hours, split between classroom and range
sessions. NRA Basic
Shotgun Basic Shotgun is intended for the first time shotgun owner,
prospective shotgun owners, or anyone who wants to learn the basics of safely
owning and firing a shotgun, along with the basic marksmanship skills needed for
hitting moving aerial targets. The
class includes both classroom and range instruction.
The course is taught in two different formats.
NRA Basic Shotgun First Steps is a 4 hour course is taught at the range.
The longer version of the class, NRA Basic Shotgun, has significantly
more range time with one on one instruction.
This longer version of the class is 9 hours, split between classroom and
range sessions.
NRA Instructor Certification Classes NRA Pistol Instructor This is the class required to begin the process of certification as an NRA certified pistol instructor. This class is for experienced shooters with the aptitude, knowledge, skills, and attitude it requires to become a successful NRA certified instructor. A pre-test that involves a shooting skills evaluation, a gun safety skills/habits evaluation, and a written test is required for admission. The first 6 hours of this class will be the NRA Basic Instructor Training Module required for all NRA training disciplines. The pre-test sessions are usually conducted one or two weeks prior to the class. Class duration is 17 hours over a two day period. The student must pass all final examinations with a score of 90% or better, and receive favorable evaluation/recommendation from the chief training counselor in order to become a NRA instructor candidate, eligible to apply for certification from the NRA as an instructor. The cost is $275.00 per student. A $100.00 Deposit is required. NRA Personal Protection in the Home Instructor This is the class required to begin the process of certification as an NRA certified Personal Protection in the Home Instructor. This class is only offered by AFTS to current certified NRA Pistol Instructors. Class duration is 14 hours. The student must pass all final examinations with a score of 90% or better, and receive favorable evaluation/recommendation from the chief training counselor in order to apply for this certification from the NRA. The cost is $200.00 per student. A $100.00 deposit is required. NRA Rifle Instructor This is the class required to begin the process of certification as an NRA certified rifle instructor. This class is for experienced shooters with the aptitude, knowledge, skills, and attitude it requires to become a successful NRA certified instructor. A pre-test that involves a shooting skills evaluation, a gun safety skills/habits evaluation, and a written test is required for admission. NRA Certified Range Safety Officer Any student who successfully passes one of the NRA firearms instructor courses and becomes an NRA certified instructor in the rifle, shotgun, or pistol disciplines is eligible to take and complete the NRA Range Safety Officer Certification course by correspondence. For any instructor candidate in one of our NRA instructor courses who wishes to pursue the NRA Range Safety Officer certification, we will provide the necessary materials for the correspondence course they need to complete, for a small additional fee.
Special programs and discounted fees are available for Boy Scouts of America or Alabama 4H leaders who wish to take the NRA Rifle or Shotgun Instructor courses. and also become NRA certified Range Safety Officers.
