Mariam is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Miriam.
Mariam is the name of
- Miriam the prophet in Exodus 15
- Jesus' Mother in Luke 2
- Mary Magdalen(e) in John 20
Each Miriam is a prophet who proclaims God's actions in the immediate
past to a wider circle, even an entire nation. Miriam proclaims God's deliverance of Israelites in song; Jesus'
Mother Mariam sings at the Annunciation of God's actions in Israel's history; Mary Magdalen preaches Jesus' resurrection and
appearance to her.
Each is discredited or even doubted by a brother, but in the end is vindicated.
Mariam, the Magdalen, and the Mother is a collection of essays exploring the
religious and prophetic identity of Mary Magdalen(e) and Mary, Jesus' Mother as Miriam figures.

Elaine Pagels says the book "enriches our understanding
of the resonances and complexity of the Magdalene traditions--traditions that echo well-known themes in the Hebrew Bible that
go back to the story of Moses and of his sister Miriam."
