I read about a process in Sky and Telescope that allows the creation of seemingly high-resolution images from a high-resolution black and white picture and a low resolution color picture.  The black and white image is imported into Adobe Photoshop, converted into Lab Mode, and the color information is replaced with the color information from the color image.  This combination of images appears hi-res because the human eye cannot distinguish color at a high resolution, so this combination appears to be a high-res color image.  In other words, since the eye is pretty bad at detecting resolution when only color (and not brightness) changes, it looks like a high res color image.  I have used this approach to combine high resolution black and white aerial pictures from the USGS (courtesy http://terraserver.microsoft.com) with low resolution pictures aerial from various sources to produce the below images:
