"I have been fascinated
by clay since early childhood and have been a potter and ceramic sculptor for
many years, a craft which has inevitably led me to explore what
other potters have done through the ages. That is how I became
interested in the preservation and restoration of ethnographic
ceramics. Since living in the southwestern US I have been specializing
in restoration of American Indian pottery, prehistoric, historic
and contemporary. I also have extensive experience on restoration
of Pre-Columbian, African and Asian ceramic antiquities.
When a ceramic object
arrives in my studio for restoration, the task can vary from simple
cleaning and gluing to major reconstruction of missing areas and
concealment of cracks. The degree of restoration is at the option
of the client. I use only reversible bonding materials, fillers
and paints that will not deleteriously affect the surface of undamaged
areas surrounding the repair, the aim being to recapture the visual
integrity of the object, yet with an eye to the future when another
conservator might want to handle the object differently".
