Twenty-eight years ago the Agape House was created by a group of people from
area churches and civic organizations. They shared a common concern with volunteers from Prison Fellowship, how could
they help the "shadow people"? These people came to Jefferson City to visit inmates in the area prisons and slept in their
cars or public restrooms.
Janice Webb and Sister Ruth Heaney formed the Agape House board in May 1980. The idea came from a West Virginia
hospitality house for inmates' families. The name came from "Agape" because of the unconditional love of Jesus and"House"
because a place was needed that would shelter and show love.
The house was purchased, refurbished and cleaned. Volunteers of all ages, from all walks of life and from
all religious backgrounds poured out their sweat, time and love to make a dream and a vision into the present day Agape
House. In 1998 the house was remodeled and updated. In 2000 the heating and cooling systems were replaced. The house today
is a clean, comfortable and peaceful place to stay where the unconditional love of Jesus, the Saviuor, is shown.
This year, our 2th aniversary, we are working on refreshing 2 of our guest rooms and replacing 15 windows
in the house. We are looking for people, organizations, businesses and churches to adopt a room. Adopting a room means supplying
new bed spreads, sheets, pillows, blankets for a room and possibly painting and recarpeting them or giving a donation
that would go towards adopting a room.
We are a registered 501c3 non-for-profit organization, all gifts and donations are tax deductable.
