2099 - A body of treaties and agreements, collectively known as the "Melbourne Accords", were signed by most space-going powers, in Melbourne, Australia. The three major provisions: Certain orbits were demilitarized, properly-operated and certified solar power satellites were classified as "civilian targets", and other worlds (then meaning the moons of Jupiter, as well as Mars and Mercury) were declared open to colonization by all nations. Canton and the ESA nations (Azania, Bavaria, Britain, and France) refused to sign. Near-Earth orbit was cluttered with solar power satellites and orbital factories. (AG:64, "L-5: Community in the Sky":67)

2099 - The Mexican-American War began. After a series of tax increases, Texas declared itself independent, rebelled against Mexican rule, asked America for aid (which was promptly granted, even though Texas turned down the offer of statehood), and later broke free, becoming a buffer state between America and Mexico. (AG:67,71)

2103 - The Mexican Civil War began, as the formerly American Southwest rebelled against Mexico, over the treatment of Texas during the Mexican-American War (and dissatisfaction with Mexican central rule). California seceded in 2103, starting the war, and was quickly followed by Arizona, Baja, and New Mexico. Due to the "Peace of El Paso" (signed that same year), America stayed out of the fight. (AG:67)

2129? - A joint ESA survey party entered the Alpha Centauri system, and spent four years in orbit around Tirane (Alpha Centauri A I), before landing and planting flags, reasserting their claim to sole rights of colonization. (CA:4) [This date is an obvious typo for 2139, since the first working stutterwarp probe wasn't built until 2136, and the first probe to the Alpha Centauri system wasn't launched until 2137.]

2130 - Guyana, French Guana, and Surinam joined to become Guyana, which remained part of the French Empire. (G:)

2130 - An ESA study found that when multinational corporations on L-5 hired workers, they usually recruited from those already on-station. Even if they did bring in "new blood", they were only 37% likely to live among people of a different ethnic/linguistic stock. ("L-5: Community in the Sky":67)

2134 - The Jupiter Probe was piloted by Sir Geoffrey Ramage. (:)

2140 - France established the Bureau d'Affaires Exobiologiques as a bureau of the French Government, staffed by five people formerly associated with the Biological Sciences Department of l'Universite de Paris. A few months later, 11 more staff were hired. ("L'Institut des Etudes Xenologiques":49) [While the text of the IEX article has this date correct, the timeline at the end incorrectly lists the first three dates as 213X, instead of 214X. These appear to be simple typo/proofreading errors.]

2140 - Nicaragua was dominated by Mexico, after a military clash.

2140 - Australia kept Indonesia out of Papua. (AG:73)

2140-2200 - The Second Age of Exploration's second extrasolar phase. ("L-5: Community in the Sky":67)

(AG:85, "L'Institut de Etudes Xenologiques":49) [While the text of the IEX article has this date correct, the timeline at the end incorrectly lists the first three dates as 213X, instead of 214X. These appear to be simple typo/proofreading errors.]

2141 - Queen Alice, of Britain, ascended the throne. (CA:11)

2142 - The Neubayern system was surveyed by a Bavarian probe, and Nibelungen was discovered. The system was not surveyed for almost a decade. Thereupon, discovery of tantalum on Wiesbaden (Neubayern IV) speeded up the system's settlement. (CA:9)

2142 - The Tantalum War began, on Earth (Sol III). The discovery of Tantalum deposits in the Andaman Sea caused hovertank engagements between Indonesia and Bengal, and the occupation of the Andaman Islands by Indonesia. (AG:67)

2143 - Indonesia defeated Bengal in the Tantalum War, denying them access to space, and earning Indonesia the reputation as the "pariahs of space", and the disdain of all starfaring powers, for their treatment of Bengal during the war. (AG:67)

2144 - Offical founding of the Astronomischen Rechen-Institut. (CA:41)

2145 - France set up its first outpost in the Bessieres system. (AG:85) [While the text of the IEX article has this date correct, the timeline at the end incorrectly lists the first three dates as 213X, instead of 214X. These appear to be simple typo/proofreading errors.]

2145 - Costa Rica was peacefully annexed by Mexico.

2148 - Cuba was peacefully annexed by Mexico.

2150 - The Bureau d'Affaires Exobiologiques had grown to 52 people. ("L'Institut de Etudes Xenologiques":49) [This article also lists 2150 as the end of the French Peace (see below).]

2150? - France was confronted by Argentina over interstellar colonization rights, and was forced to back down, ending the French Peace. (AG:65) [The first part of this statement is almost certainly in error, as it seems to refer to the Alpha Centauri War, which occurred in 2162, not 2150. The reference above corroborates 2150 as the end of the French Peace, but why it ended becomes a mystery...]

2151 - French probes, which had previously suffered an alarming failure rate (out of 16 French-built probes launched prior to 2151, only seven ever reported back), suddenly ceased to have problems. None of the missing probes were ever found, and manned missions using the same drive designs never suffered these casualty rates. During the same period, nearly identical Bavarian designs did the bulk of explorations, without suffering the same problems. (CA:9)

2151 - The Phoenix mission marked the return of American astronauts to space, after a long absence. (CA:85) [This is probably a typo for 2050, which is listed as the time of the "return to space". If not, America took a long time after the invention of the stutterwarp to get back up there! This is almost certainly not the case, since the Phoenix mission was followed by the Odysseus manned mission to Pluto (CA:85), and the Tirania colony on Alpha Centauri A I was just a few years after that.]

2152 - France set up an outpost in the Augereau system. (AG:85)

2162 - The Alpha Centauri War began. When the ESA (Azania, Bavaria, Britain, and France) announced their plans to colonize Tirane, Argentina secretly built a fleet of cruisers to prevent them from landing, until colonization was opened to all. The ESA nations were forced to back down, and sign the Melbourne Accords, in order to land their ships. This was the first use of warships in space. (AG:68)

2163 - The Alpha Centauri War resulted in the ESA nations signing the Melbourne Accords. (AG:64)

2164 - The ESAS Vancouver discovered Beowulf (Queen Alice's Star II). The captain renamed DM+46 1797 in honor of Britain's reigning monarch. (CA:11)

(CA:13,22,24)

2182 - A great many probes visited new systems, including a Manchurian probe from the orbital station at Kwantung (Tau Ceti II) that surveyed the Epsilon Eridani system, and discovered Dukou. (CA:68)

2190 - Turkish separatists in Armenia began a movement to secede, which continues through the present day. (AG:74)

2192 - An outpost was set up on King (DM+2 3312 I), and plans for colonies were underway. After several attempts at mechanical compensation failed, a team of researchers, working in conjunction with the Canadian government, developed the DNA Modifier that opened King to colonists. (CA:82) [The "AECA":62 reference to King being discovered in this year is probably a mistake. It also says that AECA's Medical Division coordinated the activities of the University of Toronto, North Carolina Institute of Technology, and John Hopkins University to develop DNAM "within only two years". That would seem to agree more with King's discovery date being 2190, as well.]

2193 - ASF engineers arrived on King (DM+2 3312 I) to establish the support systems needed for the colonists. (CA:82) ["AECA":63 gives no date, but agrees.]

21 November, 2194 - America founded the New Columbia colony on King (DM+2 3312 I), with the arrival of the colony vessel Peregrine White, and her fleet of support craft. As the American colonists moved into their homes, the engineers headed south to begin work on the Australian colony. (AG:85, CA:80,82, "AECA":62-3)

2203 - The First Rio Plata War began, on Earth (Sol III). Uruguay was originally allied with Argentina, but a change in government made it a Brazilian puppet in 2203. Argentina attacked Brazil through Uruguay, driving for the industrial center of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the battles fought were at sea, within 500 km of the coast, with coastal cities and industry as the targets. Brazil developed intercontinental LTA craft to bring French electronics and fiber-optics in from Africa. (AG:68)

2205 - First use of a space missile (by Brazil, against Argentina), at the Second Battle of Alpha Centauri.

2205? - Azania colonized Kimanjano (DM+34 2342 I). (AG:85) [This 2205 date given in AG:85 is in direct contradiction to the "Sixty years after the initial French colonization, long after the planet was established as a production and trade center, Azania decided to establish a colony there." quote given in CA:17 (making Azania the first country there), and the same page lists Azania's colony as having been established in 2280! Since all sources agree that France's was set up in 2231, 2280 was not sixty years later! Most likely, Tom Peters (who wrote the _Colonial Atlas_ entry for Kimanjano) confused the dates for the founding of Azania's Kimanjano colony with that for its Joi colony (the next one down, on the chart). If not, worlds past Kimanjano were colonized before it was! (See also 2219, 2280?, and 2291?)]

2208? - After ten years of preliminary exploration, Manchuria established a colony on Montaña (Omicron 2 Eridani A II). (AG:77) [This entry was probably meant to refer to Chengdu, below. According to the _Colonial Atlas_ and the "The Colonies of Earth" table on page 85 of the _Adventurer's Guide_, Manchuria never colonized Montaña!]

2208 - An ESA scientific station/outpost was established on Adlerhorst (Vogelheim I), which proved to be an excellent prospect for colonization, but conditions in the French Arm at that time prevented it, until 2231. (CA:35)

(CA:52) The Bavarians were building their colony on Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II), and simultaneously setting up the mining facilities on Gerollblock (DM-56 328 II) around its companion star, using food imported from Daikoku. (CA:58) [The dates 2213-2235 are probably right for the Japanese colony on Daikoku, but the 2213 date is almost certainly wrong for the Bavarian building projects, as the DM-56 328 and Rho Eridani systems were first explored in 2219!]

2214 - Nous Voila (Beta Comae Berenices III) was quarantined for six more years while a second microbe was released to kill off the first, albedo-affecting one, released in 2202.

2219 - Bavaria first surveyed the Rho Eridani and DM-56 328 systems, and discovered Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II). (CA:58) [This source says that, in 2219, Bavaria had only one colony, on Tirane (Alpha Centauri A I). This is in conflict with the AG:85 listing, which places Bavaria on Kimanjano (DM+34 2342 I) in 2205.]

These scans clearly showed the presence of tantalum deposits on the uplands of the equatorial continent that the IEE outpost was located upon. This information was suppressed in order to prevent a "tantalum rush". (CA:16)

2228 - Bavaria colonized Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II). (AG:85, CA:59)

2228 - A large group of engineers arrived on Ellis (AC+48 1595-89 I), in order to begin setting up the city of Liberty. (CA:89)

24 August, 2238 - Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc) was first visited by the Captain of the French survey vessel Le Chercheur, on an ESA-sponsored mission to chart the systems of the finger of the French Arm out past Beta Comae Berenices. Long-range photographs and spectroscopy had alerted the scientists to the fact that Aurore was in the life zone of the brown dwarf Tithonus. A ship's boat commanded by Capitaine de Corvette George Loubet executed a transpolar orbital insertion through Tithonus' radiation belts, and landed on Aurore near the present-day site of Lumiere d'Aube. Loubet and crew remained on Aurore for 18 days, visited four sites, and transmitted data back to the ship. (CA:44-5)

11 September, 2238 - Capitaine Loubet and all hands aboard the ship's boat were lost when an unexpected tidal surge overwhelmed it, as they were attempting to land at a fifth site along La Gouffre, on Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc). (CA:45)

2239 - Bavarian tantalum strikes on Wiesbaden (Neubayern IV) had been mined out. Additional minor finds elsewhere in the system (especially Neubayern VIc) kept miners looking. (CA:9) [Actually, the sixth planet, Essen, has only two satellites... "Neubayern VIc" was either completely mined out of existence (!), or this is a typo. It could have been "VIa" (Dusseldorf) or "VIb" (Oberhausen), or the "VI" could have been a typo for "IX", Frankfurt, the only planet in the system with three moons. In that case, "IXc" would be Lubeck. Neubayern IV (Wiesbaden) has no moons. Yet another possibility is that the name and stats of VIc were just left out, by accident.]

Late 2239 - Arabia began construction of their colony on Daikoku (Beta Hydri II). (CA:52)

2240 - Le Chercheur returned to Earth (Sol III), and reported its data to the ESA. The Ukraine, while not a member nation, had close political and scientific ties with the ESA, and was interested in establishing a colony on Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc). (CA:45)

2240 - Bavaria, actively mining BC (Beta Canum Venaticorum IV) since 2211, discovered small, scattered tantalum deposits, setting off "The Tantalum Boom" which more than doubled BC's population in just a couple of decades. (Beanstalk:5,11, CA:21)

2241 - The BCD-IX viral plague on Nous Voila (Beta Comae Berenices III) infected over half the colonists, and slew 70,000 before Dr. Louis Damon found the cure by using "Le Technique Damone". Victims suffered a decay of muscular strength beginning in the extremities and moving upwards, until it reached the diaphragm, resulting in suffocation, and death. The plague spread as far as Dunkelheim (DM+36 2393 I) and Nibelungen (Neubayern I). Starships advancing from Earth past Nous Voila weren't allowed to return to Earth during the plague period, and many ships stayed out of the French Arm due to fear of a general quarantine. (CA:36)

2241 - The former British colony of Wellon, on Tirane (Alpha Centauri A I), was granted home rule. (AG:76)

2241 - In return for promises of development royalties, the Ukraine received a charter to exploit Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc) commercially. (CA:45)

2241 - The Farley Launch Platform (named for the first appointed Governor) was built just outside of the city of Liberty, on Ellis (AC+48 1595-89 I). It is still the most used of Ellis' three catapults. (CA:90)

2241? - Manchurian, the Life Foundation, Canada, and Nigeria worked together to establish the international Shaoguan agricultural colony on Chengdu (Epsilon Indi II), starting with 11,458 colonists. (CA:61) [The CA says "2421", but that is very obviously wrong. Since the next date mentioned (CA:62) is 2247, I suspect 2421 was a transposition of 2241.]

2242 - The Dukou (Epsilon Eridani I) Pai-Leng mines and the orbital catapult were operational, and Manchuria was shipping male and female prisoners to Dukou to operate the facilities. Pai-Leng became available, and was found to be even more effective as an antibiotic than was predicted. Manchuria began negotiating with other nations for their prisoners, since it was becoming impossible to find willing ones at home. (CA:69)

2242 - America donated its Atropos (Proxima Centauri Ic) Scientific Station to Indonesia. (CA:4)

2243 - Dr. Louis Damon and a skeletal staff, working on Nous Voila (Beta Comae Berenices III), developed an antiviral vaccine for the BCB-IX plague. He was subsequently summoned to Earth by the French Parliment, and awarded the Medal of Honor. Trade along the French Arm returned to normal. (CA:36-7)

2244 - France colonized Adlerhorst (Vogelheim I). (AG:85, Beanstalk:5, CA:35)

2244 - Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc) was colonized by the Ukraine. The colonial expedition was headed by Vasily Martos and Polkovnik Yuri Leonivich Kamarov, and arrived in the Eta Bootean system aboard Sans Facon, an aging, converted French bulk freighter, rented for the purpose. The entire world, the mountainous island continent along the equator in the eastern hemisphere where the colony was placed, and the colony itself were all named Novoa Kiev. (AG:85, CA:45)

2242 - A Texan expedition arrived in the Rho Eridani system, and set up an outpost on Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II), intending it to be a stepping stone towards the still unexplored 82 Eridani system. Since Texas failed to get Bavarian permission, first, and gave them so little advance notice, the German colony there has minimal contact with the Texan one, to this day. (CA:59)

2244 - The Rawal Pindi Trading Company of Pakistan and the National Express Bank of America merged their holdings to become Rebco. (DG:17)

The close of 2245 - Ellis (AC+48 1595-89 I) burst onto the scene with agricultural exports far in excess of anything Hermes (Mu Herculis A III) had ever seen, producing most of the food shipped along the American Arm, thus beginning the Hermes Depression, and establishing Ellis' reputation as the bread-basket of the American Arm. (CA:86,89, "AECA":63)

2246 - The French colony of Port Loubet was founded on Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc). (AG:85, CA:45)

2248 - The Sung were first contacted, in space, in the DM+4 123 system. The manchurian explorers picked up radio signals, and upon investigation, found an interplanetary Sung ship, which they assumed to be a human craft. Attempting to contact the vessel, the Manchurians received an obviously alien reply, panicked, vacated the system, and fled all the way back to Earth. A later mission (aboard warships halted in the outer reaches of the solar system, so as not to appear threatening) established peaceful contact. (CA:52, DG:34)

2249 - The Gold Rush on Dunkelheim (DM+36 2393 I) resulted in a whole new batch of "49ers" moving to the planet, in hopes of striking it rich. This caused Bavaria to establish "immigration laws" aimed at keeping out Azanian and French colonists. Both nations protested, naturally. The Gold Rush lasted at least through 2258. (CA:39)

Late 2249 - Aerial photography of an area due south of the Arabian colony on Daikoku (Beta Hydri II) showed an unusually regular pattern beneath the local plant growth. 2252 - The Slaver War began. (AG:77)

2252? - A Texan team discovered more alien ruins on Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II). These, too, were later determined to be 4,000+ year old ruins of a former Eber colony. (DG:30) [This conflicts with the CA:52,59 entries, below, which date it at 2253.]

2253 - Texas carried out the initial survey of the DM-3 1123 system. (CA:75)

2253? - A Texan team exploring south of their outpost discovered more alien ruins on Heidelsheimat (Rho Eridani II). Comparisons to the ruins on Daikoku (Beta Hydri II) showed that both sets of ruins were made by the same species. These, too, were later determined to be 4,000+ year old ruins of a former Eber colony. (CA:52,59) [These conflict with the DG:30 entry, above, which dates it at 2252.]

2253 - A large group of would-be revolutionaries on Kwantung (Tau Ceti II), who had been transported from Earth to Kwantung the year before, attempted to take over the spaceport's ground facilities, in a doomed attempt to hijack a ship back to Earth. Liang, the leader, was killed, but Chen, his Lieutenant, negotiated with the planetary government to end the fighting. (CA:66)

2257 - Manchuria finally gave in, and allowed the local government of Kwantung (Tau Ceti II) more say in their local affairs. This included making their own laws (as long as they didn't conflict with Manchurian Supreme Law), promises that no violent criminals would be sent to colonize Kwantung, that all voluntary immigrants who were non-violent criminals would be trained in their choice of some useful skill, prior to their importation, that no more draftees would be sent, and that the local government would be consulted in any negotiations with other countries wanting to settle the planet. (CA:66)

January 2258 - Texas colonized Austin's World (DM-3 1123 I) with 15,000 colonists, using used transport ships. (AG:85, CA:59,75)

12 February, 2258 - After the cartel that established TANSTAAFL was disbanded when two of its founding members were forced to declare bankruptcy, the corporate assets were frozen by the American courts. TANSTAAFL on Aurore (Eta Bootis IIc) declared itself independent, and applied to the colonial authorities of both Aurore and Hochbaden (DM+2296 I) for favored trade status. Presented with a fait accompli, and the possibility of damaged relations with Bavaria, America was the first Terran government to formally recognize TANSTAAFL's independence, on this date. (CA:45)

2 July, 2259 - The Orbital Quarantine Command (OQC) released a false report that a deadly alien bacillus had been detected in a smuggled drug shipment only as it was about to go down to LEO. This produced the expected hue and cry that the smugglers be stopped, which gave OQC the excuse to arrest and deport the "Six Kings" smugglers, and tighten controls. ("L-5: Community in the Sky":68)

2260 - Trilon established Kie-Yuma (Xi Ursae Majoris A I) as "their" world. (AG:85, Beanstalk:5, CA:31)

2260 - Cost/benefit studies conducted on Dunkelheim (DM+36 2393 I) showed that the costs for importation and upkeep of vehicles versus horses were greater, and after careful study, Arabian horses were selected for the "Mounted Exploration Brigade", due to their superior endurance, strength, and temperament (not to mention acclimation to the Dunkelheim climate). Bavarian, Polish, and Idaho breeders on Earth (Sol III) were contacted, and four stallions and twenty mares were bought for breeding stock, along with 36 horses of lesser quality (so that operations could begin immediately). The starship Rose der Freundschaft was outfitted to deliver them to Dunkelheim, where they proved to be a great success. (CA:39) [The claim in the cited text that these were the first horses to go into space is contradicted by the "INAP" article by Dave Finnigan, in _Challenge_ #34, pages 52-5, where he states that the failed Argentine/Mexican colony on Tirane (Alpha Centauri A I) initially took horses with them.]

2260? - The Pentapods requested permission to construct an Enclave on the western coast of the French continent of BC (Beta Canum Venaticorum IV). (Beanstalk:7) [Beanstalk:7 says the request was made in 2260, while CA:21 says 2261.]

2264 - Claude LeVarse of the Paris Conservatory published _Trait Philologique_, in which he claimed that physical laws were not constant, but depended upon "evolutionary growth". While his ideas were similar to those of Hegel in the 1910s, Willems of Mannheim University in the 2120s, and Nakabuki of the Tokyo Center for the Study of Humanity in the 2180s, LeVarse claimed to be "l'homme utile", not a philosopher, and that his ideas should be applied to everyday life. His ideas were hotly debated by the philosophers of his time, and principally opposed by Miguel Simon y Vargas of the Universidad de la Paz in Peru, on Earth (Sol III). One of LeVarse' former Paris students, Louise Vachon, established the LeVarse Laboratory of Utilitarian Philosophy in Nouveau Nice, on Nous Voila (Beta Comae Berenices III). Barthes engineered an elaborate refinancing of the remainder of the second (as well as the money needed for the third) expansion. Under the terms of this "Houston Concord", L-5 would have an additional 30 years (until 2301) to pay off its debt. The third expansion would add yet another spindle and four more wheels, as well as more docking ports (enough for 60 interstellar ships a day). ("L-5: Community in the Sky":68)

2265 - Mexico colonized Kwantung (Tau Ceti II). (AG:85)

(Beanstalk:5,12, CA:21) The English and Bavarian continents lost 80% of their crops (50% of all that was planted). Grain prices along the French Arm skyrocketed. Livestock was killed off in order to avoid having to feed them, resulting in the bottom falling out of meat prices, followed by them going through the roof, as meat became unavailable. (Beanstalk:7,12)

2276 - Eva May Chandler founded Chandler University, in the city of Grey Hill, on Hermes (Mu Herculis A III), with grants from America and the AISI (American Interstellar Science Institute). It is noted for its liberal arts and life sciences curriculum, as well as its liberal political views. It attracts students from as far away as the core, and its graduates are hired as fast as they graduate. (CA:87)

4 July, 2276 - Norman Isaacs, President of the United States, signed the papers to make Ellis (AC+48 1595-89 I) a state of America. (CA:89, "AECA":63)

2277 - The Inca Republic had a falling out with INAP. (DG:16)

2278 - The colony at Montaña (Omicron 2 Eridani A II) had a dispute with Argentina and Mexico, which resulted in ships of those registries being turned away for two local years (one, standard). The Earth nations soon realized they needed the stop at the colony's spaceport more than the colony needed ships from home. The Colonial Committee on Earth yielded the point, and exports from the colony began being made on a first-refusal basis. (CA:72)

2246 - The third catapult on Ellis (AC+48 1595-89 I) was built in the city of New Boston. (CA:90).

2278 - At age 18, London gang member Johnny Burlund took a hard look at what gang life had to offer, and didn't like the picture. After becoming an officer, he left the military to form the Black Scorpion Company of Mercenaries, recruiting its members from big-city gangs. (DG:13)

2278? - A researcher with the Adlerhorst (Vogelheim I) branch of the AR-I reached the conclusion that certain crystaline structures and formations on the surface of Oiseau (Vogelheim IV) were sometimes motile, and always alive! Halogenacious life was discovered. (CA:35) [The correct date for the initial discovery could be either 2278, or 2287, but since the new probe series is said to have been launched in 2279, I think 2278 for the initial discovery is more likely.]

2279? - The AR-I probe-series confirmed Halogenaceous life on Oiseau (Vogelheim IV). (CA:35) [This date could be either 2279, or 2297, depending upon which you believe is a typo, since the initial conclusion prompting the new, higher-tech synthetic probe series was listed as being made in 2287! Another possibility is that the initial discovery occurred in 2278. Doubtless, this is just a typo, one way or another.]

2279 - With Argentine and Mexican help, the Inca Republic defeated Brazil, and ended the Third Rio Plata War. This ended when Argentina (fearing the Inca Republic would fall) crossed through Uruguay into Brazil, threatening her industrial centers. Brazil sued for peace, recognizing the Inca Republic, ceding some of Uruguay to Argentina, and officially recognizing Mexican territory in Central America which had been acquired earlier. (AG:68-9,71)

2279 - France released the first Orage-Class frigate, which returned to the concept of a well-protected (?), laser-armed ship without missiles. It proved so worthless in combat, however, that France sold off the remaining vessels. (DG:76)

2280? - "Sixty years after the initial French colonization, long after the planet was established as a production and trade center, Azania decided to establish a colony there." on Kimanjano (DM+34 2342 I) (CA:17) [This is in direct contradiction to the 2205 date given in AG:85, and the same page lists Azania's colony as having been established in 2280! Since all sources agree that France's was set up in 2231, 2280 was not sixty years later! Most likely, Tom Peters (who wrote the _Colonial Atlas_ entry for Kimanjano) confused the dates for the founding of Azania's Kimanjano colony with that for its Joi colony (the next one down, on the list). If not, worlds past Kimanjano were colonized before it was! Also, that would give Azania two colonies in one year, a feat that the CA says Texas (and not Azania) accomplished. (See also 2205? and 2291?)]

2280 - Azania established its Lubumbashi colony on Joi (61 Ursae Majoris III). (AG:85, CA:29)

2280 - Canton kept Indonesia out of Indochina. (AG:73)

2280 - The Australian census showed that the population of their colony on Kingsland (Zeta Herculis A IV) was 11,250. (CA:95).

2280 - The ESA became alarmed when the Andelmann Survey revealed that L-5 was shipping out more in value than it was taking in, and 85% of all its goods and services were going to nonterrestrial destinations (including 60% of all native production). The fact that trade with Terra was rapidly being cut off did much to spur the building of the beanstalk, to try to help adjust this trend. ("L-5: Community in the Sky":68)

2280-2299 - The "Tall Ships" (Desarge 8680s) gained a mystique as being the neutral meeting ground for interplanetary diplomats and intelligence agents. (DG:75)

2281 - Louise Vachon and 265 students at the LeVarse Laboratory of Utilitarian Philosophy in Nouveau Nice, on Nous Voila (Beta Comae Berenices III) were found dead. The life support system had been shut off, and interpretation of documents found there (written entirely in the Laboratory's new language) revealed that Vachon had directed it to be shut off in order to achieve a "deathless state" which the failure to renounce the "material state" within which humanity confined itself prevented them from achieving. The Nous Voila governemnt tried to cover up the incident, which only made matters worse, once it was known. Simon y Vargas published a scathing response in _Acta Philosophica_ in which he stated that LeVarse's teachings had, for the first time, been followed to their logical conclusions, and that the results were anything but useful. LeVarse refused comment, but retired from his Paris Conservatory post, and died shortly thereafter, without publishing anything more. (CA:37)

2282 - The Montañan Lung-Fungus Plague began on Montaña (Omicron 2 Eridani A II), and spread throughout the Latin Finger. It suffocated more than 1,000 people before a way was found to neutralize the spores, once they had settled in the lungs. (CA:71)

2282 - The Central Asian War began on Earth (Sol III). Bavaria, the Central Asian Republic, France, and Russia opposed Manchuria over CAR territory. (AG:66,69, Beanstalk:5) Because of this, construction of BC's beanstalk was interrupted. (Beanstalk:5, CA:21)

2283 - The Lung-Fungus Plague on Montaña (Omicron 2 Eridani A II) and the Latin Finger was halted. (CA:)

2283 - The first combat use of the Aconit. Two Manchurian Tunghu-class missile frigates executed the Neubayern Raid, during the Central Asian War. Once the news came out, the company was forced to close, and the President & CEO, Gerard Hofstadter, fled, but was finally apprehended on Chengdu (Epsilon Indi II). (CA:39)

2286 - The First Battle of Joi (61 Ursae Majoris III), during the War of Elysian Independence. (DG:76)

2287? - A researcher with the Adlerhorst (Vogelheim I) branch of the AR-I reached the conclusion that certain crystaline structures and formations on the surface of Oiseau (Vogelheim IV) were sometimes motile, and always alive! Halogenacious life was discovered. (CA:35) [The correct date for the initial discovery could be either 2278, or 2287, but since the new probe series is said to have been launched in 2279, I think 2278 for the initial discovery is more likely.]

2287 - The Relief of Xiuning Station occurred.

2287 - The Central Asian War on Earth (Sol III) ended. Manchurian victory was spoiled when Japan entered the fray on the other side, ending the conflict with the pre-war boundaries intact. Guerilla warfare in the region continued for decades, and Franco-Russo-Japanese Peacekeeping Forces remained in the area. (AG:66,69, Beanstalk:5)

2291 - BC's beanstalk was completed. (Beanstalk:6,8, CA:21) The shipping costs for using the beanstalk were so much less that the French and English colonies shut down their catapults and scramjet field. Bavaria kept hers, mostly for use in sending processed ores into orbit. (Beanstalk:8)

2291 - Exercizing the now-proverbial "Dunkelheim slyness", the Dunkelheim Cabinet met in a secret session, ostensibly to form their own plans for rebelling against Bavaria, and claiming independence, citing the "current intolerable conditions". It was known that Klaus Binger, Minister of Transportation, regularly reported what occurred at cabinet meetings to friends in the Bavarian government back on Earth (Sol III). The whole scenario was choreographed, with various ministers raising objections in such a way as to leave Bavaria a way out. Thus, when Binger made his report, he also pointed out that certain key ministers would work against the "rebellion" if these conditions were met. Not long afterwards, Bavaria suddenly announced that it had been planning a concerted colonization program, and that Dunkelheim (DM+36 2393 I) was to be the very first to receive the benefits! Naturally, no rebellion ever occurred, since the Dunkelheimers had gotten exactly what they wanted... (CA:39-40) [As you'll see, below, references in the cited text to the War of German Reunification, as well as to "Germany" are incorrect, as the War of German Reunification hadn't occurred, yet.]

2291? (See also 2205? and 2280?)]

2293 - The Bavarian firm of Folie, Lysander et Geiger, which designed the beanstalk on BC (Beta Canum Venaticorum IV), was relegated to an advisory position, and replaced by the French firm of Le Chemin Juste. Later, when electrical power failed for about three hours and 40 outbound beanstalk capsules (including three passenger capsules) came loose and crashed to "earth" on BC, the French claimed German sabotage, while the Germans claimed French incompetence/negligence. (Beanstalk:6,8,12,16, CA:21) In order to keep the peace, the British were allowed to conduct the investigation, which continues unto the present day. (Beanstalk:8,12)

(CA:13) Crater (Henry's Star I) was shown to have a population of 1,557,300 in 3,000 hectares of area centered around Rimview. (CA:24) New Cornwall, on Joi (61 Ursae Majoris III), was shown to have a population of 287,000 in less than 1,000 hectares, mostly in the town of New Falmouth. (CA:28)
