My Diabetes

Because I started exhibiting symptoms of diabetes while I was undergoing combined Intron A - Rebetol (generic: interferon/ribavarin) treatment for Hepatitis C which led me to an extreme weight loss and left my body in a dreadfully rundown condition, I've always suspected a cause-effect relationship existed. For a while I pursued the matter vigorously, but eventually ran out of steam and decided my energies were better spent getting a handle on my diabetes.

After having little or no success with pills--glucotrol, glucophage, avandia, et al--I was placed on insulin. Currently, I am taking Novalog before meals, and Lantus in the evenings and, consequently, my sugar's been under relatively good control.

Of course, diabetes care is an all-day project. Besides watching my diet pretty closely, I sweat to the oldies with Richard Simmons every other day (Super Sweatin': Party Off the Pounds), and work out to another Richard Simmons DVD (Blast and Tone) with 8 and 12 pound dumbbells.

I'm a carb counter. For me, it's a lot easier to keep track of my carbohydrate intake than working with exchanges. And that's the whole idea, isn't it, making diabetes as easy to live with as possible.

The Latest. Here's the progression of my most recent H A1c tests: 3/2005 7.3, 6/2005 6.7, 10/2005 7.0, 1/2006 7.1, 4/2006 7.5, 8/2006 6.5, 12/2006 6.6, 4/2007 7.1, 9/2007 7.0, 3/2008 7.0, 1/2009 6.7. After the doc had me increase my pre-supper shot and my evening Lantus by one unit each, my H A1c dropped to 6.7. He was happy with that. The blood pressure medication seems to be working. We started with 5 mg of Lisinopril, then moved up to 10 mg, and then 20 mg. Twenty is working like a charm and I found that it's on the WalMart list. A 90 day prescription costs me $10 at Wally World. My cholesterol's looking pretty good - HDL 54, LDL 88, Total 150. Of course, I don't eat much meat so it should be low.

Don't forget your annual eye/retinal exam.

Keep pluggin'.
