I got to see a screening of a short film I did over
the summer, Valley of the Moon, directed by Gianni Monteleone and written by his brother, Frank Monteleone, that is sort
of a trailer for the feature (and you still haven't told me what happens in the rest of the film, Frank!). It was great fun
to shoot, notwithstanding that they had me running, and running, and running down an asphalt road in a full suit on a couple
of 98 degree days. Gianni is an actor and an extraordinarily talented painter, and he brought that artistry to his directing.
The film involves a very talented and self-involved architect, moi, who is drawn into a conversation
with a precocious boy, only to learn that the conversation may never have happened and he may not be so firmly in control
of life as he believes.
Having now seen the completed work, I have to say that the some of the visuals are absolutely striking. Not surprising,
I suppose, given that a visual artist was directing. Also remarkable was the work of the Director of Photography, Hermes
Marcos. Gianni kept referring to him as an extraordinary find and he was so right. There are shots in this film that he had
no right getting.
Let me say for the record that
the first time I see myself on film in anything, I hate it. I cannot suspend disbelief, and everything about my performance
bugs me. That said, this was so much less painful than usual that I think it must have been good. There were moments that
I thought, "Oooh, I like that" though Frank, Gianni and Hermes can take credit for most of those.
Now the film
is off to Festivals and we shall see.
