Policies:

Goals:
  • The primary goal is to provide improved location and contact information for the various Portuguese Festas in California, with limited coverage for other parts of the United States. The location data that is now available elsewhere, often does not provide enough information for the casual person to find the festas. Various types of inaccuracies contribute to the difficulties.
  • The secondary goal is to increase our web site traffic.

Examples of Listing difficulties:
  • For example the Redlands Portuguese American Hall is listed in the phone book, in Mentone. This is "next to Redlands".
  • Inaccurate information is a problem that you can have with festa dates and locations. Use caution when you have never heard of the festa location. Go with care when you cannot verify the location or group: on Internet phone directories, in paper phone directories, paper yellow pages, or in dependable publications. Even with verification the festa could be canceled, or the date could be changed.
  • An example of such an inaccuracy, is the festa listed on 05/28/00 as: "Festa do Espirto Santo at 1:pm, in Nellie Weaver Hall at Norco St / end 6th Street, Norco, California." It did not happen on the date an time specified. There is no such visibly named hall at or near the location specified. The problem was the date and description of the location. There are 2 ends of 6th Street. The hall is in a park at the other (East) end of 6th.
  • The "usual date is expected." The example is the "4th Saturday of June", for the Hynes DES festa. Some years, such as 2000, scheduling conflicts cause date changes. Instead of the expected June 28th, 2000, the Paramount Hynes DES festa is on June 18th & 19th, 2000.
  • A further example of an unneeded difficulty, is one group copying the festa list of another group. One of the primary lists for California, is originated by the I.D.E.S. Supreme Council, head quartered in Hayward. For the Year 2000, one of the telltale dates for 2000, is the June 2000, Paramount Hynes D.E.S. festival. The Supreme Council has the expected date, not the correct date, and so do most of the other copies. There are other mistakes that are also copied, without any checking.
  • Each Festa usually has a related Church. This is where mass is held and is one end of the parades or festa marches. Likely church addresses and phone numbers are provided in the church listing. The associated church might also have other festas that are not related to the local Portuguese hall or Portuguese festa's. Italian Festas, Mexican, Greek and Armenian festivals are also enjoyable events.
  • Some of the churches in the church list, might not have festas, but are included to save you from having to look them up. To add to the difficulty in finding a festa location, some churches and halls have unlisted phone numbers, or no phone at all.
  • The festas in this listing, are grouped by by general geographic area. They are ordered by the date in which they occur. Any dates listed in red, such as 05/24/00, or with a "?" at the end, are estimates. A purple date 05/24/00 indicates some change out of the ordinary. Related halls, churches, and other locations are also mentioned. Check the Organization, Church, or Meeting page for related or more information.
  • A blinking Festa with a lime background indicates the next festa date. The Next link takes you to the next area's next festa date while the Previous link takes you to the previous area's next festa date.
  • The Meeting locations, Church information, and Organizations were listed at the end of each area. This information is now listed on separate pages, with the same area format. This is to reduce the size and clutter amongst the events. Information about some organizations has been obtained from the on-line State of California Corporations business data.

Considerations:
  • Be considerate if you call any of the telephone numbers that are listed. Avoid calling the halls on the day of the festa. The people helping with the festa have enough to do.
  • Be considerate of the church phones listed. The churches typically are busy Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday. In all cases, try to call during business hours, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, their local time.
  • The information in this list was obtained from various and sometimes conflicting sources. If you have any questions, call one of the telephone numbers listed, send a fax, send an email, or talk to one of the contacts. This information is presented here to help you find and go to the listed festas.
  • Phones identified as cell phones cause the owner to be charged each time a call is received. Use other phones to contact the person if they are available, to avoid any phone owner charges.

Privacy:
  • Telephone numbers, (877)555-1212 or (877)555-1212, listed in this directory, have been found on the Internet. Red phone numbers, (877)555-1212 or (877)555-1212, were found on the Internet, but not found in any phone directory, online or otherwise. Green, phone numbers, (877)555-1212 or (877)555-1212, were found on the Internet and are contact phones.
  • Telephone numbers from publications, where the phone number is not available on the Internet will not be published, unless prior approval is received from the owner of the telephone number.
  • Telephone numbers that are identified as a cell phone will be reluctantly used. Consider that most cell phone users must pay a charge to accept calls.
  • When the phone number's owner's name, does not reasonably match the Internet listing the number will not be used. Such as a contact where the address is correct but the phone is listed in some other name. A green "Contact", in the address area, and a red "Contact?" in the phone field, indicates that a contact phone number is available, but is unlisted on the Internet.
  • Meeting places that are in private homes will not be listed, even when they are available on the Internet. Only those meeting places that are known public places, such as a business or hall, will be listed as a meeting place. If you are looking for a meeting place that is in a private home, you will not find it here.
  • Be careful of giving your unlisted phone number and / or address to anyone asking for your information. It can wind up being published on the Internet. If you do not want the number published, make sure the party understands that you do not want it published, on the Internet, or in some paper directory. Even better, if you do not want it published, do not give out the information.
  • Any information collected in the Guest Book, will not be distributed to any others, but the information will be seen by all users that view the Guest Book.

Servicios Morales assumes no responsibility for the content or availability of any external site.
  • Links to maps and telephone listings can change without warning. If the response returned is not as you might expect, contact us and we will attempt to replace the link with a different link that works.
The Earthlink directory entries based on telephone searched seems to change from time to time. These kinds of links have been updated. Have patience if they change again.
Some of the SmartPages directory entries links are changing 03/26/01, 10/16/01.

Mapblast no longer allows direct access to maps as of 10/16/01. To use their maps either sign on, or pick a service and then enter the location your looking for. Access to Mapblast is possible by using user=guest with a password=guest.

Direct access to street numbered maps via Excite may disappear in February 2002. Their parent Excite@home is scheduled to stop operation at that time (note as of 12/10/01) (disappeared by 12/19/01 sooner than expected)

MapQuest aerial photos of map locations are not stand alone or persistent (12/19/01). It turns out that you can view them after finding a location on a map. Saving the URL does not save access to the Aerial Photo. So aerial photos must be accessed after the map is displayed. Look for the "Aerial Photo" tab at the top of the map. Increase or decrease the resolution, of the map or aerial photo, by using the "Zoom" features. Increase the size of the map or aerial photo by clicking on the "Big Map" button.

Overheard at Various Festas:
  • At the beginning of the parade in 2000. "Why are the queens wearing tennis shoes under their gowns?" The answer: The parade route is over 3 miles from the hall to the church and back. Arroyo Grande.
  • Forty dollars, please? What do you mean? I was just talking to these people. You're the high bidder. You were waving your hand for every bid.
  • Were you swatting that fly or were you bidding on this wine? Both.
  • Remember, "The only bad sopas are no sopas." A comment heard at an Artesia festa in 1999.
  • A variation of an old joke. How many Portuguese does it take to screw in a light bulb? The answer is none. They now hire someone to do it. Success has an impact on old jokes.
  • "I collect cows (porciline ones). Now I can say I owned a real cow for 3 minutes." I bid on a calf and it was mine until the next bidder bought it.
  • "When asked what I like best about bullfights." My reply .was: "When they barbeque the bull."

05/02/04
  • Planned Change to 03 page access completed.
    • The direct access to 2003 pages consumes too much web resources. Indirect access is being considered.
      • Planned changed implimented. Data traffic appears to be flat, instead of increasing, which is ok. Stay tuned for further traffic trimming.
04/26/04
  • Planned Change to 03 page access.
    • The direct access to 2003 pages consumes too much web resources. Indirect access is being considered.
      • This will get users to the selected year 2003 page in two steps. A small 2003 directory / header page will be displayed. The link to the actual page will be manual. The user must select and click on the link to get to the new page. A link to the 2004 page will will also be available. A quick look at the pages shows that 2003 pages consume over 30% of the web resources. The plan should reduce resource consumption by some 20%.
04/02/04
  • Planned Change to Holiday's 02c page.
    • The Holiday's 02c page will be split into Present & Future, and Past.
      • This will get users to the current year quicker, and provide less data traffic. Past years will be available, but with an additional click required.
03/04/04
  • Change Current Index page.
    • Change actual date changed to "weekly".
      • The pages change weekly when the current date banner is moved so the change date has little meaning for the actual festa pages. The date changed will remain for all other pages.

  • 2004 changes to 2003 pages.
    • Add link on 2003 page headings, to link to corresponding 2004 page.

  • More Planned Festa page reloations.
    • Continued significant increases in traffic will require more page relocations.
      • Festas31f Centeral Coasts & Southern San Joaquin Valley will be relocated to reduce traffic on the remaining pages in the abreu home page. Automatic links will allow users to get to the new location in abreu3.
05/18/03
  • Festa page reloations.
    • Continued significant increases in traffic required more pages to be relocated.
      • wsn5D6D.html Michael F. Abreu Property Management, was relocated to "abreu1" usercode to test auto-switch from "abreu". One draw back is using the "back" function, as it puts you in a loop until you select some other page, or click on the back function quickly.
      • Festas31e.html Northern San Joaquin Valley was relocated to "abreu3" with auto-switch from "abreu" to reduce traffic on the remaining pages in the abreu home page. The auto linking mechanism was inspired by source code used by the INS. The auto-switch link switches users to the new page location in "abreu3".
      • MexResM1.html Mexican Restaurants, was relocated to "serviciosmorales" usercode because of high traffic. A manuel link allows users to get to the new location.
05/16/03
  • More Planned Festa page reloations.
    • Continued significant increases in traffic will require more pages to relocate.

02/25/03
  • Festa table in North San Joaquine split.
    • The festa table was split into 3 month pieces on the North San Joaquin Valley Festa page.
      • It appears that there is a limit about 264 rows for the VisualPage software. The 264 row limit prevented editing of the rows after the limit was reached.
      • Spliting the table into yearly quarters is a trial. Other splits might occur on this and other festa pages as needed. The only impact might be on printing the entire festa page with splits.
02/20/03
  • Planning addition to Sources.
    • A new Food/Cooking/Receipts heading on the Sources Festa page is planned.
      • Links to other Portuguese food/cooking sites.
      • Correct spelling for various Portuguese food specialties. Like how many ways to spell Filohs???
12/05/02
  • 2003 Preview released.
    • Festa pages for 2003 now available for review via the Festas3x Index .
      • 2003 has an extra page Festas31f. Details follow.
      • Headers and trailers now expanded to same size ( 670 pixels) as festa information. Preliminary print tests look like a good fit on 8 1/2" by 11" paper.
      • Update information now only shows day. Time for day no longer shown.
      • Preview dates shown in Fusia, ie 02/17/03. This means date was calculated by formula such as "5th Sunday after Easter" .

    • Festa page Festas21 split was delayed until the Festas 31 preview.
      • Festas21 was split into Festas31 ( Southern California ) and Festas31f (Coast South ,South San Joaquin Valley & Central Coast) all other components. other pages linking to these pages will also be changed.
07/30/02
  • Sources rearranged.
    • Festa page Festas02 re-organized.
      • The Festas02 sources were reorganized by area to make it easier to find a source. Having to look through the whole list was to time consuming. There are "All / General" and "Bands / Entertainers" in addition to the other geographical areas.
06/16/02
  • Planned Festa page split.
    • Festa page Festas21 will be split.
      • Festas21 will be split into Festas21 ( Southern California & Coast South) and Festas21f (South San Joaquin Valley & Central Coast) all other components. other pages linking to these pages will also be changed.
