| Note on | Abreu name: from Naming Traditions (Part II), Surname Types, by Doug da Rocha Holmes, Page 9, volume 14, no 4, December 1995, Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society. .. The history of names in Spain pre-dates that of Portugal. So it follows that there are identical traditions and later variations of usage and spelling. Toponymic (Surnames indicating a location) By the twelfth century, the noble classes are using a location to help identify people. This gives us such as "de Sousa"; .. "Abreu" (from Evreaux, France); .. "Bettencourt" (Bethancourt is a former location in Picardy, France).. |
