We left Hallandale FL for the Dallas TX area … work calls. We decided not to go back to Lighthouse RV Park in Melissa TX … this time we tried Dallas NE Campground in Caddo Mills TX. The campground is very nice: lots of room, some trees, a 5 acre pond, 2 large fields for the dogs to run, grassy sites, and very friendly people. Most of the other Rvers were either temporary while building a home in the area or contract telecommunications workers.
We had several visitors while we were here. Jerry & Dorothy Veil stopped by for a weekend on their way to Birmingham AL. The four of us went to the Texas Fair where Dorothy and I had great corndogs … they were just too small! But now Jim & I remember why we usually don’t go to fairs … we don’t enjoy them except for the food.
Michael & Elita Stamp also stopped by on their way home to NC. We went to supper at Applebee’s and just hung out in the campground catching up.
Jim’s son and daughter-in-law, Joe & Jacque, came down from Amarillo TX for a weekend. We went to the American Airlines Museum. It was really interesting to see the history of the airline.

October 27 – 29 we went to the Wichita
Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Lawton OK. The 60,000 acre refuge is maintained
by the National Wildlife Refuge System. David & Arlene Baker met us
for the day on Saturday. The campground there is great! The sites were
long, level, paved and in the trees – oak and cedar. Most sites have no-hookups,
a few have electric. We went to the visitor’s center, drove all through
the refuge looking at wildlife – buffalo, deer, elk, prairie dogs, wild
turkey
and longhorn cattle roam free throughout the refuge. Wildlife can usually
be seen from the car and often cross the roads.Dave & Arlene took us
to Meer’s for lunch. They were both great tour guides, especially
with Arlene’s background as a history teacher specializing in Oklahoma
history. We toured Ft. Sill and the artillery museum and then ended the
day by seeing Geronimo’s grave site. There’s so much to see in the area
that we didn’t have time for … we’ll have to go back sometime.
Jim’s son and daughter-in-law, Joe
& Jacque, came down from Amarillo TX a second time for a weekend. We
went to
the
Cavanaugh Air Museum at the Addison Municiple Airport which has nearly
50,000 sq. ft.
of display area. The museum is well documented with signs and storyboards
throughout. The museum collects, maintains and flies an extensive collection
of aircraft and houses artwork and artifacts spanning the time period from
World War I through the Vietnam conflict. These rare and significant aircraft
make up one of the largest private aviation collections in the country.
Most of the aircraft in the museum are maintained in flyable condition
and the majority of them are still flown regularly.
Eagles migrate to Lake Fork Reservior to spend November through March in warmer weather. I drove down there one Saturday afternoon and saw a Golden Eagle sitting in a tree right next to the road. The next Saturday Jim & I went down there again and saw a Bald Eagle perched atop a dead tree eating his catch. That area is known as the Eagle Capitol of Texas. I didn’t get any pictures … they were too far away for the digital camera to focus well, but I saw them with my binoculars … I just sat there and watched until they flew away.
