ABAKAN Samoyeds Questions to ask yourself before thinking about getting a Samoyed puppy.

1. What is your knowledge of the Samoyed breed? Where did these dogs come from? How old is this breed? What kind of things did the early Samoyed dogs do?

2. What is your reason for wanting a Samoyed in particular?

3. Are all the members of your family agreeable to the addition of a Samoyed? Please think about the members of your family, their ages, and what their interests are. If you are the only family member interested in getting the dog, will you be prepared to do all the dog chores? (feed the dog, pick up the dog poop, train the dog, walk the dog) If other family members are involved in getting the dog, is everybody willing to share in the responsibility of having a dog?

4. Do you have a well fenced area where your dog can be? What sort of area is this?

5. Are you aware of the Samoyed coat and the fact that the Samoyed dog will shed? Some shed more than others. Is white dog hair on your clothes, or on family members' clothes, or other places(car, food, etc), going to be a problem, or something you will be able to live with or make manageable?

6. Are you aware that some Samoyeds are diggers? Will you be able to have an area where your dog can either be allowed to dig, or an area covered with concrete, concrete block, bricks, or other impenetrable material so that the dog can have an appropriate place to be?

7. If you work in the daytime(or at night), do you have a place where your dog can be when you are gone? If your dog barks when you are gone, will this be a problem?

8. Are you willing to allow your dog to develop at its own rate? Some dogs take longer to housebreak, longer to socialize; some dogs are extreme chewers. Are you prepared to work with your dog to make it an acceptable member of your family?

9. Most dogs are much happier with a regular exercise schedule. If you are not especially athletic, will you devote part of each week to spending some physical time with your dog in such activities as walking, hiking, throwing a ball in the yard for your dog, taking the dog swimming, etc?

Thanks for taking the time to prepare yourself for your new Samoyed puppy.
