The Toledo Fudds lounged about on a huge blanket in the field, talking, staring the clouds (that one looks like a bunny!), or watching the kids play in the playground. Their axes were scattered around in the grass, more or less out of sight. The last unblocked warren entrance, some kind of service tunnel barely large enough for a bunny, was directly under the center. "When can we go home?" Matt whined, "We won, didn't we? It's all over now." "Not quite," Bob replied, staring off into the distance. "We're still more or less in the middle of bunny territory. Jak says we can expect a counterattack, sooner or later. And they haven't even started searching the city for symps." "Middle? I thought Michigan was unclaimed..." someone else remarked. Bob shrugged. "They have Detroit, and the rest of Ohio, and Indiana... I'd call that surrounded. Not to mention that they still have this city. Do you really think Carty won that election by himself?" everyone chuckled. "The squirrels say they can hold the warren unless PAW is willing to concentrate most of its resources..." "But they also said the warren was virtually undefended," Matt said, "And that we were the only attack. Can we trust them?" "Yeah," Jenny said, "If their plan had gone off, we'd all be dead. Did you see how many bunnies there were?" "I think that's a bit unfair. We'd only face the full assault for a few seconds, until the main attack hit. And those human/squirrel tactics we practiced would've worked." Bob looked around, but no one else seemed to agree with him. "Besides, I've been checking up. These bunnies are nationwide. Do you remember that UFO landing site that was on Sightings? The one where the road was melted? The squirrels say that was where a suit of bunny morpharmor detonated." Jenny snickered. "You watch Sightings?" "Shut up, just shut up!" ************** Meanwhile, Teral stood by as the last chunks of cement were cleared from a passage through the rubble pile that blocked the tunnel to UCirc. "I'll go through," he said, scrambling down the narrow passage towards the small opening in the far wall of the rubble pile. He popped through the hole and tumbled two feet to the tunnel floor. He stumbled to his feet and looked up into nine hundred lasers arrayed in ordered phalanxes along the tunnel floor, and also on the sides and roof of a transport. There was a slight commotion as Zira pushed her way to the front. "Teral!" she said with a happy bounce, "You're alive!" Teral gave a [greetingsflick] and ran up to her. "The diversion worked," he said, smiling, "I'm sorry about those grenades..." "That's okay," she said, "No one blames you. If you hadn't taken out those armored bunnies we'd've all been killed. They were unstoppable! But how did you win? You couldn't've had more than two hundred in there with you..." Teral grinned. "The bunnies hadn't set more than a token guard at the warren entrance, so the diversionary force took them out, and just ran all the way through the warren, unopposed. There we were, only a few of us left, backed into a corner outnumbered six to one, then they run in screaming bloody murder. And the bunnies ran! I couldn't believe it!" "Where'd they go?" "[shrugflick] Who knows? Who cares? We blocked all the entrances except one, and all the tunnels. They probably ran back to PAW." "What about the civilians?" "We have them under guard in their burrows. I put the kits in a separate room, to discourage any escape attempts. [flick] We got them all without having to kill any. And there were as many as I thought. Loren should be satisfied." "If you still have their families," She said, slightly worried, "Those bunnies WILL be back." Teral snorted. "Let them come. We'll be ready." He turned to address the squirrels in general. "Anyway, now that you know who won, can you guys help clear out this tunnel? We should really get the place running as soon as possible. Especially the algea vats, unless you want to eat SPAM. [grin]" No one moved for a second. Teral [flicked] in annoyance. "THE BATTLE'S OVER!" he shouted, "WE WON! NOW CLEAR OUT THE DAMN TUNNEL SO THE TRANSPORTS CAN GET THROUGH!" The squirrels let out a deafening cheer, and rushed forwards to clear the pile. Teral just stood there, confused.
