Chit's training group was deep into a tactical simulation, just about to enter the second level of the alien colony when Zander asked the question that had been circulating among the recruits. "So when do we get to kill the bunnies?" "I don't think we do," Chit replied, moving the SWS down the elevator to scout around. The squirrels chittered (or was that chattering?). "We have to kill them!" Zander squeaked, "They chased us all over the city! They killed every squirrel that didn't run away!" "Well," Chit said, "Perhaps you may have noticed our lack of weapons? We have two lasers and two tranq guns, against God only knows how many vorpal fangs and claws." "So why are we here, then?" Lyudmilla asked. She'd been killed in phase one, when Zander tried a trick shot past her head from across the screen. "Why don't we leave now, instead of staying here for them to find us?" "'Cause of Zaphod's plan," Charlie answered before Chit chould respond. "Exactly. I just hope he gets on with it soon." Chit shuddered. "If we stay here much longer I'm going to have to kill someone." "Yeah, me too," Zander said, "So why don't we take the lasers and go bunny-hunting?" It was his turn, and he started plotting a disrupter pulse, threading the guided missle precariously around various squad-members and down a flight of stairs to take out a pair of tentaculats Richter had run into. He clicked on 'launch', and the missle went two squares before detonating, taking out him and seven other squaddies as they waited to move. "Damn it! Stupid launcher." "Great. Just great," Chit said, shaking his head and clicking on 'end turn'. The tentaculats converged on Richter, and a pair of sonic beams came out of nowhere and toasted the SWS. Game over. "We're not going to do it *again*, are we?" Charlie whined. Chit sighed. "I'll talk to Kara. Maybe she knows how much longer we'll have to wait. You guys... do whatever you want. But don't go outside, we don't want to get the bunnies suspicious." The squirrels chittered and groaned, but he was pretty sure they were afraid enough of the bunnies not to go running out unsupervised. -- Chit ([chitter] Kids!)
