The rabbits charged the small forest yet again, and the squirrels opened fire. But the bunnies had learned -- rather than charging in a mass as they had the first time, they spread out, dodging from side to side... A few were wounded, perhaps killed, but most made it to the tree line. They stayed under the trees for only a few seconds before running back the way they'd came, but in that time dozens were shot by concentrated laser fire, or shredded by explosives dropped on their heads from the squirrels that lined the branches. The squirrels cheered as the bunnies retreated. Suddenly, there was a loud crack, and the sound of splintering wood, as three of the large trees on the edge of the woods slowly tipped over and fell to the ground. Some of the squirrels in them managed to jump to the trees that were still standing, but the rest were overwhelmed as the bunnies turned and swarmed over them. In seconds it was over. "We can't keep this up," one of the squirrels said to the commander, "They'll wear us down. Every time it looks like we've won, more reinforcements show up." "If we run, we're done for," Group C's commander replied, "Once they get us out in the open we won't last ten seconds." "What if we left a few squirrels behind to put up a show of defense? By the time they realized we were gone we'd be far enough away--" "That they'd have to call their good buddies to the north to catch us for them?" The commander flicked his tail and chittered. "I think they've got us. All we can do is make them pay for it." "Unless..." "What?" ----- "We've got 'em this time," the armored bunny said to the bun beside him, "They barely put up a fight last time." "We didn't catch many in the trees, either. They must be watching which ones we rig and evacuating. [fluff]" "Ha! Sooner or later they'll run out of trees, and that'll be the end of 'em." He gestured at the shrunken forest, surrounded by a ring of burning, splintered wood, as well as the bodies of squirrels and bunnies. "We've got enough BunnyArmor here now that they won't be able to wear us down with those popguns, and they've got to be out of explosives. It's just a matter of time." ----- "Go!" whispered the commander, and the last five squirrels scrambled out of the trees and across the field. Without bounce packs or weapons, they were indistinguishable normal squirrels. It would take days to make it back to the warren, but if the devilbunnies could afford to hunt down every squirrel in the state... they'd lost already. "I don't beleive it," he said to the other four, "They waited long enough for everyone to get away. Is everything ready?" He looked around at the wires and electronics threaded through the treetops. Yep, they were ready. "They're not going to buy it," one of the other squirrels said, "They know there's more of us left than this." "They've only been attacking with the BunnyArmored troops. With all that smoke out there already, they can't tell if we're firing or not. Set it for a twenty second timer, and get ready." A few minutes later, the bunnies charged yet again. They fired, but without any effect. He waited until they just reached the treeline, and pushed the button. "GO! GO! GO!" the five of them leaped wildly through the trees, heading for the far edge, near the road. Halfway there the commander realized they weren't going to make it. With a roar loud enough to break windows miles away, and a flash that briefly blotted out the sun, the demolition charges intended for three warrens went off at once. When the fireball faded, and the cloud of smoke dissipated, all that was left was a shallow crater where the forest had been. A bun in armor hopped across the scorched earth. He glanced around briefly, and activated his radio. "Blitzer to MacCartwheel," he said. "Well?" "Target eliminated."
