Standardized Tests and Homeschooling
Homeschool testing requirements vary from state to state in the U.S. Some states do not require testing, some require
yearly testing.
If you are required by law to test and wish to comply, or if you simply wish to see how your student(s) would do on a
standardized test, here are some resources for testing your homeschooler at home.
You are the only one who will be given the results, as opposed to testing through the school system.
Bayside School Services
Bayside gives you original publisher materials plus genuine CTB scoring reports. They include free publisher recommended
test familiarization practice exercises for all grades (K-6 for the CAT/5) where available.
The test price for the 2007-08 school year is $60 per CAT/5, which includes Priority Mail delivery to you, but not return
postage.
Brewer Home School Tesing Services
Nationally Standardized and Up-To-Date Tests Homeschooling Parents or Groups may Administer from Home.
The Iowa Tests can be administered by you, or anyone of your choice, who holds a bachelor's degree:
IOWA Tests of Basic Skills® (ITBS® ) (Grades K-8) Form A $38 (MORE INFO JUST BELOW IN BLUE)
IOWA Tests of Educational Development® (ITED® ) ( Grades 9-12) Form A $38
The BASI; can be administered by the child's teacher or someone who has experience administering a standardized test.
A bachelors degree is not required.
Basic Achievement Skills Inventory; (BASI) (grades 3-12) $40
The (Iowa) ITBS is what we (the homeschool family running this site) used this year. We normally use the CAT-E through Seton
(below), but wanted a more complete picture this year.
One advantage of using the ITBS® is that it also evaluates Science, Social Studies, and Sources of Information. These
tests are optional, but the cost is the same.
Subjects tested include: Vocabulary, Word Analysis, Reading, Listening, Language, Spelling, Math Concepts, Math Problem
Solving, Math Computation, Social Studies, Science, and Sources of Information. (Social Studies, Science, and Sources of
Information are not required by the state of NC and are optional)
WE ARE NOT BEING PAID FOR THIS OPINION IN ANY WAY. These are simply companies and tests with which have had good experiences
or about which we have heard good feedback.
