Some of the Costumes for

The Wizard of Oztin
Party

Richard and Kelly, the hosts of the party

In June of 2005, Extravagant Occasions asked me to do costumes for the crew of an elaborate costume party based on "The Wizard of Oz" and its modern retelling from the witch's point of view, "Wicked". There were several difficulties inherent in this undertaking. First of all, short notice. I was told about the party only a few weeks before the day of the party and did not even get a preliminary cast list until two weeks before the party. I needed to costume about 50 people and I did not yet know who most of them were. That meant I would need about 70 costumes in different sizes that I could assign to performers as they were cast. I did not have time to make that many costumes, most of them would have to be bought off the rack and even buying them was going to take a fair amount of time. Secondly, the party was to be held outdoors in Texas in July. It was going to be hot! (The day of the party, the temperature reached 104 degrees which is not unusual in Texas in July.) Because of the heat, many of the traditional costumes for this story simply would not work. The actors would pass out. I would have to come up with lighter, cooler costumes that would still give the idea of the characters. Fortunately, because the host of the party was using ideas from "Wicked", it meant that some of the costumes could be sexier than was usual, and sexier frequently means less coverage and therefore cooler. That made certain outfits easier. However, the cowardly lion and the flying monkeys were still a challenge, but by using small pieces of fur in specific places, it gave the impression of fur without actually covering the actors in fur suits. There was more good news in that I would not have to get costumes for Dorothy, the Munchkin Mayor, the Coroner, and the Wicked Witch since the performers for these parts were friends and family of the host and were providing their own outfits. And best of all, I received a lot of help from my fiance and all of the others involved in this production.
