After driving to the lower 48 State Capitols on the '48 in 08' tour, Doc wanted to cruise
on up to the 49th State Capitol - Juneau, Alaska. Doc heard Gordon was already planning to cruise to Alaska in his
'57 Thunderbird. So the two guys started making plans. Doc kept after Lucy -- trying to convince her that this was the
trip of a lifetime in 2009 -- it really didn't take too much arm twisting once they said something about driving in the Interior
of Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
Doc also found a couple, John and Connie, riding
a 2009 Harley Electra Glide Classic; they will join the flock in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. They are riding all
the way from California (via Utah!) to Whitehorse.
As recently as the end of July, a fourth T-Bird joined
the flock heading North to Alaska. This classic is a 1957 Inca Gold driven by Walter from New Jersey. (Yes, he drove
his '57 T-Bird from New Jersey to Oklahoma to Phoenix to Oregon; from Oregon he will drive it to B.C. for the CTCI Convention
and then to Bellingham to join the flock going North to Alaska.)
We plan to depart Bellingham, WA, mid-August and return
to Bellingham mid-September.
Our current itinerary includes taking the Alaska Marine
Highway ferry from Bellingham, WA, to Juneau, AK. Take photos of our T-Birds at the AK Capitol and do some sightseeing in
Juneau.
From Juneau, we plan to take another ferry to Skagway,
AK. Then the fun really begins because we will be driving our T-Birds in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, Canada. A few of
the places we plan to see while cruisin' include: Whitehorse (the capitol of the YT), the North Pole, Fairbanks, Denali National
Park, Healy, Wasilla, Anchorage, Palmer, and Tok. The current estimate is 2,000 miles of driving in Alaska and the Yukon Territory.
After cruisin' the Yukon Territory and Alaska
highways in our classics, we'll return to Juneau and cruise on the ferry back to Bellingham.
Vehicles on this tour include: one 1956 Thunderbird
(The Chick Magnet), three 1957 Thunderbirds (Ira, Betsy Bird, and 'Gold Eagle'), and one 2009 Harley (Red th' Zed).
