Results of 2009 Vote for Thirty-One Days of Italians

CARY, NC - August 24, 2009: Voters have selected the fourteen Italians and Italian Americans, to join the seventeen Honorary Members, who will be commemorated during Italian American Heritage Month in October.

For the third year, voters elected Yogi Berra, Frank Capra, Joe DiMaggio, Fiorello La Guardia, Mario Lanza, and Giovanni da Verrazzano. Geraldine Ferraro and Henry Mancini are on the list for a second year.

This year’s vote took a literary turn with voters adding Helen Barolini, John Ciardi, Pietro di Donato, and Daniela Gioseffi; gave a nod toward football with Vince Lombardi; and bestowed a standing ovation to the most popular of all—and new to the list for 2009—Frank Sinatra.

All join Honorary Members Father Pietro Bandini … Constantino Brumidi … Mother Francis Xavier Cabrini … Enrico Caruso … Christopher Columbus … Enrico Fermi … Amadeo Pietro Giannini … Guglielmo Marconi … Filippo Mazzei … Antonio Meucci … Maria Montessori, M.D. … Andrea Palladio … Antonio Pasin … Arturo Toscanini … and Amerigo Vespucci on the 2009 list of Thirty-One Days of Italians.

The first day of October honors the Italian immigrants who came to America for a better life and contributed so much to the infrastructure of this country. The last day of October is reserved for a special Italian not on the list—a favorite relative, friend, neighbor, or someone not personally known, but admired.

2009 Honorable Mentions include Giovanni Caboto, Anthony Fauci, Lee Iacocca, Rocky Marciani, and Dean Martin.

Thirty-One Days of Italians, a list of Italians and Italian Americans recognized for their extraordinary achievements, was established to promote Italian American Heritage Month throughout America and to educate Americans about Italian American history, culture, and heritage.

The grass-roots campaign—started by author, educator, and researcher Janice Therese Mancuso—is becoming an educational resource for Italian American history by disseminating the significant contributions Italians and Italian Americans have made to America.
