2006 Part Thirty-seven
by Exfilia
"Which end of Pennsylvania is Scranton in?" asked the president.
"East," said Leo. "It's on 84 about an hour south of the New York border. Half of Washington wants to ride up on Air Force One."
"Take care of the regulars first, then take as many as we can."
"Walken? Katie did a profile on him for the Sunday magazine, four part series. He says he liked her. He says he'll get to Washington on his own, and ride with us from here."
"He's up to something."
"Yes, sir."
"This is turning into a circus."
"Yes, sir, but this was Katie. She'd have got a kick out of it."
"Josh? What's wrong?"
"Cops were upstairs talking to the First Lady."
"Oh, God, what now?"
"Donna!"
"This is the woman who violated the most basic canons of her profession and then whined about politics when she got caught."
"She didn't whine about getting caught. She whi... raised unholy hell because she had to take a punishment several times more severe than any other doctor anywhere...."
"She whined. I love her, too, Josh, but she definitely whined."
"Yeah."
"You were supposed to keep arguing with me."
"Sorry."
"Tell me."
"Danny says they showed Mrs. B. a picture. Amy was alive, but she was tied up somewhere."
"How about the baby?"
"It looked like she was ready to pop, this according to our resident medical expert. I swear, if John did this...."
"Where would she be?"
"Huh?"
"If Hoynes wanted to hide someone, where would he put them? I mean, you know him as well as anyone...."
"And he knows it, and he knows I was close to her. He wouldn't keep her anywhere I could find her."
"Josh? What if it's not him?"
"Huh?"
"What if it's somebody trying to hang this on him, because of the other? Where would they put her...."
"...to make it look like it was John? Donna, your mind is convoluted!"
"But you love me for it. They wouldn't want to move her far, and they wouldn't want to take a chance that he'd show up and find her."
"He owns property in Virginia."
"Also in Pennsylvania and Delaware, according to his financial disclosure forms."
"Delaware? Donna, I think I need to talk to Danny."
"Are you all right?" C.J. asked as Danny appeared in her door.
"Yeah," he said, rubbing his forehead. "Yeah, but the boss is upset."
"Throwing china?"
"Crying at her desk. She thinks if she'd been suspicious when Amy's resignation turned up, she might have stopped all this."
"No. If Amy wasn't the one who left the letter, someone else would have had to have access to her office, someone on their side. We vet our people better than that."
"Excuse me, C.J., the president wants you."
"Thanks, Charlie. Did he say what about?"
"No, but if your job's coming open, I'm available."
"You don't want it. Look what crawls up out of the press room when you're not looking."
"C.J.," the young man said, "I was there. You were looking."
"Good man," said Danny. "Highly developed observational skills."
C.J. turned on Charlie.
"So tell me, Sherlock, how could someone other than Amy Gardner have got Amy's putative resignation to the middle of the First Lady's desk blotter?"
"That someone would have to work in the East Wing," he replied.
"Exactly," said C.J. to Danny. "And since I'm figuring the First Lady doesn't hire spies, I've got to believe Amy was snatched after she quit. Where's the president? Charlie, where's...? Okay, guys, what now?"
