White House Princess
2006 Part Seventy-four
by Exfilia
They filed into the Oval to find the president and Leo hugging like football players who'd just won a championship. Josh stopped, and the others formed a line beside him: C.J., and then Toby, and then Will, and stood and watched.
"What are you looking at?" Leo growled, although the effect was spoiled when his smile reappeared immediately afterward.
"Rejoice with us, my friends," said the president. "Something has finally gone exactly right. A Special Forces team touched down briefly in Deburras today and took off again with all the hostages..."
"...safe and sound..." injected Leo.
"...as well as evidence that the Deburri government was making nerve gas in facilities they told us were rural clinics, facilities we helped build."
"Not a single casualty," said Leo. "Nobody even stubbed their toe. We're out, and it's over."
"And we're out in such a way," said the president, "that the Deburris have to accept our offer of assistance in their effort to integrate the orphans from the camps into their society."
"Home run," said Toby.
"Grand slam," Leo told him.
"Okay," said C.J., "I'm going to need State, and the Pentagon...."
"Figure it out later," the president told her. "Right now, we have five minutes to actually rejoice, and we're damned well taking them while we can."
"Donna?"
"I think Toby's in with your dad."
"Yeah, I know," said Ellie. "I just wondered how you were doing."
"I'm... a little freaked."
"I heard."
"You hear why?"
"Pretty much. Josh is feeling kind of rejected."
"Why?"
"Because he asked you to marry him and you said 'no?'"
"He doesn't really want to marry me. It was just his way of saying he'll miss me when I leave."
"Ya think?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. Look, about the bridesmaid's shower...."
"What do you think of the clubhouse at the zoo?"
"What do you think of Toby's house?"
"It's a nice house...."
"Donna, there are eight bridesmaids. You don't have to do this all by yourself."
"I couldn't accept...."
"That's the beauty of it. You don't have to. C.J. does. So what about it?"
"Toby's going to have a fit."
"It was his idea."
"It was?"
"Toby loves her, Donna. He wants to make her sort of a White House princess."
"I don't think that's going to be a problem, but wouldn't you fit that bill better?"
"I don't have the flair. C.J. does, and so do you."
"I'm an assistant, Ellie, and I'm not going to be even that for very much longer. My flair is immaterial."
"Think about it, Donna. Think about waking up every morning for the rest of your life with Josh's arm around you."
"That's not the problem," said Donna. "The problem is that I can't imagine not doing it, and that's scaring the hell out of me."
