The Pasted On Smile
2006 Part Seventy-Eight
by Exfilia

"Danny," said the president as he left the Mural Room, "don't lose anybody, okay?"

Oh, great. Not only did he have to give a Washington tour to C.J.'s towering brothers, he had to do it without losing them. Or, for that matter, Josh or Toby or Will or Ed or Larry, any of whom were likely to duck out intentionally. Danny was dead meat, and the brother with the oak leaves was grinning him and nudging the one with the eagles. In any service but the Navy, they'd both be colonels, one light and one regular, but fate wasn't that kind to Danny.

"You didn't get the names, did you?" asked the youngest brother with a warm smile.

"I got some of them," said Danny. "I'm pretty sure the one that left was Julia, right?"

"Don't feel badly about it. There are an awful lot of us to meet all at once. I'm the youngest, and they ran out of names and gave me a number: Quentin."

"Okay," laughed Danny.

"Marcus is the oldest, with the eagles like Marcus Aurelius."

"Which probably wasn't what my dad had in mind," grinned Marc.

"And the sissy second child is Cecil." The middle brother glared at them until Mark swatted his arm.

"Cool," said Danny. "So where are we going first?"

"Actually," said Josh, "we're starting with a tour of the Capitol. We have to pick up Sam."

Danny smiled to cover his dismay. Even if he didn't lose one of the Creggs, keeping track of Sam Seaborn was a task beyond Hercules, much less the First Lady's Chief of Staff.

"Okay," he said, pasting on the bravest smile he owned, "let's go!"

"Who's going to brief?" asked Mitch.

"I don't know," Carol told him. "C.J.'s gone for the bridesmaid's luncheon, and Will went with the groomsmen to show the Cregg brothers around Washington."

"Come on, Carol, this is important. We've got stuff we need to know! What are we getting? Toby?"

"He's on the tour. So's Josh. So're Ed and Larry."

"How'd you get left out of the wedding party?"

"I'm keeping the bride's book."

"Good to know. Who's keeping the briefing book?"

"It's that big a deal? I could get you a few minutes with Leo, if you want."

"If we yell at Leo, he just yells back. You're telling me the entire communications department left without calling a lid?"

"I'm telling you... no, the entire communications department didn't leave! What am I, chicken fried steak?"

"You're going to brief?"

"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, I am."

"Well, hot damn! Get out there, then!"

"Quit grinning, asshole. This is not going to be a free ride for you!"

"Secret plan...?"

"Secret plan to pull your credentials and get your snarky smile reassigned to the animal control beat if you give me a hard time. Get in the briefing room where you belong!" She leaned around him and spoke to an intern. "Call the two minute warning, Mitzi. It's time to feed these beasts."

Mitch strolled into the briefing room and flopped into his seat, thumbing through his notebook. This was going to be fun.
