"Leo?" said Toby. "Can I resign for the night?"

"How come?" he asked.

"'Cause I really need to kick John Hoynes's ass."

"Didn't we do that already?"

"This is personal."

"What did he do now?"

"C.J."

"What about her?" Toby met Leo's eyes and finally it sank in. "Would she testify?"

"You're assuming there's anything for her to testify about. It was a while ago, and I don't know if I'm thinking of the right... occasion."

"But you think?"

"I *know* enough to know he's never going to be President of any country of mine."

"Easy, Toby. Think what you're saying."

"She's crying. She's sitting in her office crying right now. We can't let this happen. I'd rather have Walken again."

"Is she the only one?" Leo asked quietly.

"How you gonna know? Are we going to send a memo to everyone in the White House: 'Were you ever coerced into sexual activity by the Vice President?'"

"Jesus, Toby."

Leo's cell phone rang.

"Who knows you're up at two A.M.?" asked Toby. Leo shrugged, thumbed the phone on and heard a familiar voice.

"Hi, Sam," he said. "Yeah, Toby was just wondering who knew we'd still be here. What's up? Yeah, that'll be okay. Listen, don't laugh, but during the campaign or during your time at the White House, did the Vice President ever come on to you? No, Hoynes."

Toby crossed his arms over his chest and guffawed.

"What do you mean, what makes me ask that?" said Leo. Toby stopped laughing. "Sam? Are you telling me he did? Okay, tell me exactly what happened."

"That line's not secure," said Toby, but Leo waved him down.

"Okay," Leo said to Sam, "we'll call you again on this. No, not on this line, Sam. I'll call you tomorrow; we'll set something up." He touched the off button and slid his phone into his pocket. "Hoynes touched him," he said. "Sam told him please to move his hand. He didn't, so Sam moved it for him."

"He backed off?"

"Mrs. Hoynes came in. Sam says that was all there was."

"We can't let him be President, Leo."

"You think it ever gets that far? I think this comes out during the campaign and the next president makes Joe McCarthy look liberal. We gotta get Hoynes out of the race for good and all. We gotta kick his ass."

"So," asked Toby, "who we gonna get?"
