Hominibum Bonae Voluntae
2006 Part Ninety-six
by Exfilia
On top of everything else, Danny was a wonderful dancer. He spun C.J. over the floor until she was giddy, and then walked her to the nearest punchbowl with a strong arm around her waist.
"I don't think that's going to help, Daniel," she said.
"This one isn't alcoholic," he said. "Go on, drink."
She drank, and felt better, even her constant headache having vanished.
"You are good!" she said.
"Want another one?"
"I can't. I have to pee already."
"You live in the bathroom, don't you?"
"Moved my desk in last week," she said, downing another cup of punch in spite of herself.
"You okay? I mean, you don't have an infection, or something?"
"I get this way sometimes, Danny. If it doesn't clear up, I'll see a doctor next week. Right now, though, I have to brief the president before he tackles the sponsors of the dental insurance amendment."
"It has an amendment?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you. I'm going to cruise the ladies' and then the Oval. Dance with the First Lady, okay?"
"If I can get her away from your brothers," he laughed.
"He threatened a serving military officer, Leo," Toby whispered as they walked down the hall, and the whisper was somehow more intense than a shout might have been.
"The way I heard it, he threatened two, or three if you count the sister."
"Exactly, and in front of witnesses."
"In front of members of his opponent's campaign, and the officers in question are her siblings."
"And he doesn't know yet that she's his opponent."
"So what do you want me to do about it?"
"I want you to have the president take it public."
"What's he going to say?"
"All he has to do is deplore the threat."
"And what's that going to do to C.J. when she announces? It'll look like she's protecting her family instead of protecting the country. We can't do this, Toby. We can't muddy the waters like this."
"Isn't that for the president to decide?"
"He's going to tell you the same thing."
"Yeah."
"All right, as soon as he's done with C.J. and the insurance people, who incidentally are waiting...."
"How long have they been in there?"
"Forever. Charlie, would you see if C.J. and the president can take a break for a minute with me and Toby?" Charlie Young stood up and knocked at the door to the Oval. There was no answer. He knocked again, and pushed the door open.
"Mr. Presi...."
"What is it?" asked Leo. Charlie grinned and beckoned. Leo did some grinning himself when he walked through the door with Toby and found Jed and C.J. sitting side by side on the sofa asleep, his head on her shoulder and her face against his hair, the dental insurance proposal scattered on the floor at their feet like so many giant snowflakes.
