The Frontrunner
2006 Part Forty
by Exfilia
"Come in, Sam," said the president.
"Thank you, sir. I wasn't sure...."
"That you'd be welcome? You did stupider things when you worked for me, and it worked out okay."
"This is going to work out okay, too," said Leo. "He's up six points. He's the frontrunner."
"Probably," said Toby, "on the basis of what you said you told Hoynes you'd do if he ever tried it again. Very nice imagery, there."
"Thank you. I wasn't sure you'd approve of my grammar."
"It was not a grammatical moment."
"If you liked that one, you should have heard what I said when I found out there's no such paper as the Star."
"There is, I think," said the president. "Isn't it a British tabloid?"
"Yeah," said Leo. "Their headline this morning was 'We didn't do it!' Speaking of which, has Hoynes had anything to say?"
"He said he was drunk," said Toby, "and Sam must have misinterpreted something he said."
"Am I supposed to have misinterpreted where he put his hand?"
"Drunk, my ass," said Leo. "That man hasn't had a drink since... he doesn't drink, at all."
"Nice that he can control his vices when he wants to," said the president.
"At least," said Toby, "this will get C.J. out of the spotlight for a while."
"Not necessarily," said Leo. "People are asking for her by name to be a part of campaign events. She's second choice, right behind the president."
"It's starting," said the president.
"I don't think so," said Leo. "At this point, I think they're just disassociating themselves from Hoynes."
"At this point?" said Sam.
"Please don't ask," said Toby.
"Josh," said C.J., "you said you knew a judge."
"Hoynes again? What's he done now?"
"No, not that. It's just that we... you heard Danny and I are getting married here in the White House?"
"Yeah, and I think it's above and beyond. For some things, you should have privacy."
"You wouldn't want to be married here?"
"I'd feel like I shouldn't want to, like I should want it to be six friends in the park."
"But...?"
"But who am I kidding? To be able to stand up in the Rose Garden with her and say I love her in front of everybody and not have anybody be able to make anything of it? Yeah, it'd be great. I mean, if she wanted."
"You could, you know. He said senior staff get White House weddings."
"By the time we get around to it, it won't be him."
"You could hurry."
"Did you come in here to give me advice about my love life?"
"No, I came... why did I...? Oh, we need a judge for the wedding, or a justice of the peace, or somebody. Any suggestions?"
"I can't think of anybody who'd turn you down. Let me see what I can come up with, okay?"
