2006 Part Five
by Exfilia

"Daddy?"

"Mal? What are you doing here?"

"Trying to entice my favorite man in the whole world to have dinner with me?"

"Date cancelled?"

"And left me stranded with a reservation I've been trying to get for weeks. It's the new Greek place. Come with me?"

"We got a thing."

"You always have a thing, and you always clean it up. Do it quick and come have souvlakia with me."

"Believe me, I'd rather be doing that than doing this."

"Then come."

"Better idea: you leave your fourth graders teacherless and come have lunch with me."

"If any of my fourth graders show up over the Easter Holiday, I'm calling Children's Services. You really want to go to lunch?"

"I can't."

"Okay, I need to go see John Hoynes anyway. I'm going to get him to read a chapter of his book for my class. Can we go to dinner afterwards if...?"

"Mallory!"

"Daddy?"

"How much contact have you had with him?"

"Daddy! Postal much?"

"You're too old to abuse the language like that, Mal."

"And I'm too old for you to be acting like this! What's going on?"

Leo took a deep breath.

"You know that line in 'My Fair Lady' where the sidekick asks Higgins if he's 'a man of good character where women are concerned?'"

"Hoynes flirts, yeah, I know."

"He's maybe flirted himself into some trouble. What do you mean, he flirts? He flirts with you? Flirts how?"

"Don't be silly."

Leo took a deep breath and spoke very deliberately.

"Mallory, I need to know. This is maybe part of the thing."

"Okay, well, it was right after that picture of Sam and that girl, and I guess he could see I was upset. He sat me down and told me that it was going to be fine, that these things happen. He held my hand, but it was friendly, you know? And then he asked me if I wanted to talk about it at all. Daddy, what's wrong?"

"And then he put his hand on your knee, but just friendly, like?"

"Yeah, how did you know? I mean, it wasn't... did he do that to someone else?"

"Oh, yeah. Keep going."

"And then we talked about standardized testing, and I told him why it sucks, and I guess I calmed down. As I was leaving he asked if I minded if..."

"If you minded if he asked you a question?"

"Daddy, you're blushing."

"I'm going to kill the son of a bitch."

"Nothing happened."

"Yeah, it did. Word for word, move for move, the night your mother left. He...."

"Daddy, if you turn any redder I'm calling a doctor. What happened?"

"He used exactly the same routine on me."

"You don't have the plumbing. Okay, now that's too red."

"You're not doing too good yourself in that area, Mal."

"He really...?"

"Yeah, he did."

"This is so wrong."
