Have We Embarassed Everybody?
2006 Part Eighty
by Exfilia

Tracy could have kicked herself. She was lying on the broad roof of an old farmhouse. She'd climbed up from the gable in the end, but there were rows of dormers on the front and back of the roof, and those windows you could step right out of.

Luckily that didn't seem to have occured to Bernard. She heard him running down the stairs, and then the front door banged.

Which was not good. Tracy could be seen from the ground, at least once you got a little ways from the house. She did not want Bernard chasing her all over this roof. But where...?

Yes, she was an idiot. The second dormer window she tried wasn't latched, and she lowered herself through it into a broad hallway. There was a door at each end. She tiptoed to the one she knew. Locked, of course, but just with the stupid in-the-doorknob thing. Tracy had been watching crime shows all her life. She slid the metal barrette out of her hair and slipped the flat part between the door and the frame. The lock popped loose, and the door swung open.

She felt her grin evaporate. Amy lay sobbing in the middle of the bed, her blood-soaked clothing disarranged, and beside her....

"Come on," Tracy said, scooping up the infant.

"Can't."

"You have to. I can't carry you and the baby too!" She tugged at Amy's arm, but couldn't even get her to sit up.

"Go," sobbed Amy. "Just take it and go. They don't care about me!"

"Amy...."

"Tell Josh he sucks."

"I'll send help," Tracy told her.

"Go!"

Tracy stepped back out into the hall, and heard the door slam again. She glided into the nearest dormer as Bernard stormed up the stairs. He ran into the room without looking around. Tracy stepped up behind him, grabbed the door and pulled it closed.

Bernard could certainly make a lot of noise when he was pissed, she told herself as she ran down the stairs.

"It's just his second term," Josh told the Cregg brothers, "so he doesn't get an office in the actual Capitol."

"He's a Member of the House of Representatives," said Cecil. "Isn't scrambling for status a bit undignified?"

"Oh, his scramble is just beginning," said Josh.

"Actually," said Will, "he seems to have fared fairly well in the initial stages."

"We heard," said Quentin.

"We did?" asked Marcus.

"You don't get C-SPAN at sea?"

"Was I on C-SPAN?" asked a handsome young man standing in a doorway.

"Fairly frequently, Congressman" said Quentin with his usual dazzling smile. "My kids are a big fan."

"How many do you have?" asked Sam.

"Twenty-six, this term."

"Teacher," Danny told Sam.

"No kidding. Has he met Mallory yet?"

"Oh, yes," said Quentin. "She's showing me the Smithsonian tomorrow."

"Really?" said Sam.

"Yeah," said Ed, "and Toby's dating Ellie Bartlet, and Josh and Donna are getting married. Now have we embarassed everybody, or do we need to go over something else?"

"Maybe," said Will, pointing past Sam to the television where the White House briefing was just beginning, with Carol at the podium.
