What are we doing here...

In June 1995 we moved to Bucharest, Romania and began working with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES), which is the international body that InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) is a member of, on the campus of the University of Bucharest. Our main job is providing training for the students in the areas of leading Bible studies, evangelism & discipleship. We also work to raise up graduates to serve as full-time staff workers with the students, and to be in charge of the ministry. In late June 1999 we received official approval from the Romanian government to exist as a nonprofit organization called Organizatia Studentilor Evanghelici din Romania (O.S.C.E.R.). We have 13 groups from across Romania who have joined our national movement. There are approximately 500 student involved throughout Romania.

Some more history of O.S.C.E.R....The National Movement in Romania formed more as a federation of 8 city groups coming together with a common vision to see students coming to know Christ, to see them established in their faith and then to see them become productive, life-long members of the local church after they graduate. They began meeting together in December 1994 for sharing ideas and fellowship. Finally after years of working together and forming a national Constitution they received government approval to become a recognized organization in June 1998. Then in July 1999 O.S.C.E.R. was accepted as a full member of I.F.E.S.

IFES is a fellowship of students, staff and supporters: a third of a million people with one goal - to bring glory to God by establishing a vibrant gospel witness among students in every nation. We are now working in 150 countries. There has been almost unimaginable growth in the past 15 years, but we still have some of the toughest places ahead.

We are an evangelical movement, committed to a high view of Scripture - its preaching, teaching and study. We seek to help students recognise the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of life and thought.

Staff aim to provide biblical models of leadership and of ministry, where possible encouraging students themselves to take leadership responsibility on campus.

All IFES national movements seek to present a culturally-relevant witness to Christ, working in close partnership with the Church in their country, wherever that is possible.

National movements all share the following three major objectives:

• Evangelism - proclaiming Jesus Christ as Saviour, Lord and God to students in every country in the world, and leading students to personal faith in Christ.

• Formación* - promoting a life of discipleship and a growing maturity among students associated with our movements, and equipping them for a lifetime of service in the family, church and society.

• World Mission- encouraging students to take the good news of Jesus Christ to every nation on earth, and become witnessing communities of salt and light in every area of society and culture.

* Formación is the Spanish word for nurture or discipleship-training.

Our Roles in Romania

Kris

My role has developed and changed over the years as our family has grown, and as the children have matured. Currently, I am teaching second grade as well as helping out with physical education for the elementary students as we recently lost our PE teacher. I teach at a private, English speaking, Christian school where all three of our children attend. As well I meet with a few of the women staff in Bucharest, and I try to gather some of the former women students together once a month for dinner and a time for us to share together. I am also trying to reach out to the wives of the national staff who travel throughout the country. I want to be able to encourage them and support them as they are often by themselves with small children as their husbands travel.

Mike

My role has developed and changed over the years as well. At first, I was more involved with only the student group here in Bucharest, but as the national movement has developed and grown I have taken on more of a national role. I am more involved with helping to develop and train the national staff as well as being involved in helping to raise funds for the national movement both within Romania and outside. Another aspect of my job is helping the movement to think about missions. I would like to start a training program for helping to send Romanian students on short-term missions teams especially to countries close by Romania.
