Southern California Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action
2003

ADA is the nation's most
experienced independent liberal political organization, dedicated to
individual liberty and building economic and social justice at home and
abroad. Since 1947, we have led public opinion and coalitions by taking
early, principled stands on a broad range of domestic, foreign, economic,
military, social and environmental issues.
After a lengthy
battle with Cancer, former board member, Madeleine Stoner passed away
Sunday morning. She is survived by her husband, SCADA board member, past
president and Chapter co-founder, Ralph Fertig. Madeleine also leaves her
children and grandchildren and friends, and I know I speak for our entire
board in offering our deepest condolences to Ralph and family.
Donations in Madeleine's memory may be made to the Madeline Stoner and
Ralph Fertig Scholarship Fund, and mail to USC School of Social Work,
University Park, L.A. 90089-0411. Attention: Marlene Wagner. You may also
contact Marlene Wagner at 213-740-831.

It
is with great sadness
that we inform you that SoCal ADA's board member of many years, Don White,
has passed away. Don was a beloved board member and community
activist. The Board members of the Southern California Chapter of Americans
for Democratic Action will profoundly miss Don White but his joyous spirit
and dedication to his progressive ideals will forever be remembered.
Below, in Don's own words, he briefly described his political passions. We
invite to link to the more complete chronicle of Don's extraordinary,
tireless work for countless communities and progressive causes:
"My own political life began nearly 50 years ago in the Pacific Northwest as
a student opposing the House Un-American Activities Committee [HUAC) and
protesting the witch hunt of the ultra-rightwing U.S. Senator Joseph
McCarthy. My sense of justice was fine tuned in those ugly years of the
1950's.
The VietNam War years brought me to a full understanding of U.S.
intervention and imperialism.
For 35 years —from 1963 to 1998— I taught U.S. history to middle school
youth in Los Angeles, a task made easier and more enjoyable by the work of
Howard Zinn.
My
involvement with the Committee In Solidarity with the People of El Salvador
[CISPES] from its founding in 1963 gave me a "front row seat" in the
solidarity and liberation movements of the 1980's and enriched my life with
14 trips to Central America. My special, continuing bond with the Central
American community is a treasure of my life.
I
continue to work with a broad spectrum of progressive groups and have served
on countless steering committees for mass mobilizations. I currently serve
on the KPFK Local Advisory Board (LAB)." (excerpt from Don White's 2003-2004
KPFK Local Station Board candidate statement).

The public memorial for Don White will be held on August
10, 2008 at 6PM at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 3300 Wilshire
Blvd., Los Angeles. The committee working on the memorial is meeting
weekly to develop a program we believe will best honor Don and celebrate
his life.
Don's brother
Dennis, was in L.A. over a week ago and was unable to find any
information from Don specifying his wishes with regard to donations to
be made in his memory. His brother is absolutely fine with donations
being made in his memory to any of the many causes he supported. As
SCADA board members, we were privileged to have served on the SCADA
board with Don for many years, some of us for more than a decade. If you
choose to make a donation to SCADA in Don's name, be assured that I will
forward that information to his family as well. I have attached Don's
bio and as you'll see, there are many of Don's causes to choose from. If
you choose to make your donation to SCADA, please be sure to make a
notation in the memo line specifying "in memory of Don White" and mail
to SCADA, 8124 W. Third St., #102.
Thank you.
Lydia
P.S. Sally and Peter are still looking
for more pics of Don for the 10 minute video they'll be screening at the
memorial.
