   History of the Lodge

Before we start into the History of the Lodge we would like to give the History of the Brethren that had the foresight to start a Lodge in Swansboro:

Dr. George N. Ennett who was born at Golden Place (near Folkstone) in Onslow County on December 20, 1838. Graduated in Medicine at the University of Medicine of New York on February 25, 1860. Married Lucretia Borden on February 26, 1868. Initiated into LaFayette Lodge 83, Jacksonville, NC about the year 1865 and afterward affiliated with Ocean Lodge 405 in Morehead City and became a Charter Member and the First Master of Seaside Lodge 429, Swansboro, NC on November 2, 1889. He died at his residence in Carteret County on August 4, 1897. He was a Senior Deacon at the time of his death.

Dr. W. J. Montfort was born on April 14, 1839 and died April 29, 1917. W. Bro. Montfort practiced Medicine in Onslow County for 50 years and was raised to the degree of Master Mason in LaFayette Lodge 83, Jacksonville.

Seaside Masonic Lodge 429 was under dispensation on November 2nd, 1889 with W. Bro. George N. Ennett as Master with 8 members present and one visitor and the fees for the degrees would be $20.00 and the Secretary and Treasurer be exempt from paying dues. Regular meetings would be held on the First and Third Fridays at 11:00AM. The Lodge was Chartered January 16, 1890, about 4:00PM and was Constituted May 1st, 1890 by District Deputy Grand Master, W. Bro. Saul Roundtree of LaFayette Lodge 83. Bro. George N. Ennett was Installed as its First Master.

Between that time and the early 1900's the installation of officers was performed in the Methodist Episcopal Church that stood on Church Street in Swansboro.

A FAMILY AFFAIR AT SEASIDE 429

Swansboro -- We sometimes see a succession of family members joining the Craft. A son follows a father who followed a grandfather. Multiple generations being raised together are more unusual. Family pride must have been at an all time high recently when Seaside 429 raised three relatives at the same time. Edgar Harrell Smith was joined by his son Stephen Harrell Smith and his son-in-law David Jospeh Gillis at a triple raising. Both Stephen and David were wounded in the line of military service, Stephen in Vietnam and David in Desert Storm. Edgar was luckier.
